all sound advice there nrgserv I never trust garages either and I work in one. I always show the dead parts to the customers to show what I am going to replace then show them once they are removed aswell but alot of the time the customers still have no idea what I'm showing them. Ive even had people ask for their brakes to be replaced then told me I don't need the locking wheel nut key cos I won't be taking the wheel off to do it :frusty::frusty::frusty:
 
And if it's the pump fubbard get a genuine or equivalent quality replacement!!!
Source it yourself to avoid garage adding silly costs. Or ask one of these nice grown ups what to get ;)

can cause warranty problems. who warrants a customers part, and who foots the bill for changing it?
worth enquiring on with the place undertaking the work.

Haha! I'm not that bad - I know where my locking wheel nut is :D. I thought (I hoped) it was just one of the pipes rubbed through or something but I am going up to the garage this morning for a chat. They are really good with me, to be honest, they know I need my landy for work and getting my horse about so always try and sort me quickly and do try to fix DIY style before replacing parts, and try to source less expensive parts where they can...but I'm still going to ask... Thanks for your help guys x
 
Another thing to look out for with this TD5 fuel leak malarkey is the seal between the pump unit and the tank. This is a rubber thing and gets a bit crisp over time. Even if the tank is not brim full, with the fuel sloshing around as you drive some can escape. With the breeze blowing under the car as you travel, it can spread around quite a bit so it's worth trying to be clear first of all about where it is escaping from. Because time is money, mechanics sometimes jump to conclusions about what the problem is, perhaps based on what was wrong with the last one they saw, whereas a bit of thinking and investigation can pay dividends.
 
Fitted silicone intercooler hoses, straight through centre pipe and new back box.
Noticed that rear bumpstops have disappeared and mountings all corroded, better get the welder out on the weekend.
 
Took the big bolt off the crank pulley. Then one of the 4 little bolts holding the pulley on rounded off. Rather fooked off that its stopped play again and im going to be relying on lifts for that little bit longer.
 
Took my driver seat out, repaired the cd changer and put it all back...... beware the rear offside bolt ! has a locking nut underneath ... no other bolt does!. I assume in case you want to convert your old disco into a wurlitzer !

Get some irwin bolt extractors, rounded bolts need never slow you down again!

Ha I bought some on express delivery for tomz shortly after it happend. If they dont come in time I shall get a friend who works in a garage to grab me one ;)
 
Stripped out heater box and fixed leaky pipe that had worn against the housing.
Soldered up and matrix re-packed and housing assembled ready to re-fit...soon...hope I dont need de-mister on tomorrow!!
 
Got my rounded bolt off finnaly. But now cant get the damper off. Dont have one of those pulling tools. Would come in rather handy right now :/
 
Discovered that the washers on the front brake caliper need to be in place before torqueing up the bolts!

I have just spent almost 2 days trying to figure out why the new disc was siezed ... so:

New bearings, just in case the old ones had worn right down - unlikely, but it could have happened,

New oil seal - because it has to have one

New brake disc - to replace the foobarred one ... piccy at some stage, maybe

New caliper bolts - force of habit

New drive flange gasket - force of habit

New drive flange bolts - force of habit

and loads of grease

It still seized solid!

Strarted to back track and tried rotating the hub at each stage, until I took out the top caliper bolt and the hub rotated! Went to my degrease bath and compared what I had with what came off, to find that the old bolts had a washer on and the new one didn't!

Put the old washers onto the new bolts ... Perfect!!

I now have 'hold-on-to-your seats' brakes again, and am a very happy bunny!
 
Let it take me to pick up a new load of contact lenses .. then rest .. :)

Took me wagon for a good drive, making sure no more valve springs wanted to snap lol!!!

Just a quick one, after an hour drive odd, the top and bottom rad hoses are both hot but the header tank is cold?? Head gasket is fine, stat is fine, would this mean my radiator is pooped?? It's generally warm all over the rad with not many bent fins at all, temp gauge sits on half,

Is it normal for 200 header tanks to be cold but rad hoses hot? :confused:

Belt was a lot thinner then the new one. And found there to be a line on each cog where its covered and not covered. Been like this for some time I think.
