What have you done to your Landie today.

I've been painting mine


I had it cleaned by the local Kurds the other day and they dropped one of their brushes between the spare wheel and the boot door.

So, I take the spare off to fish the brush out, then notice that the spare wheel carrier is as rotten as the rest of the Land Rover was this time last year.

Oh well, off with the spare wheel carrier and ordered a new one from my local Land Rover main dealers, (£40.16 inc VAT) along with a new air filter, (£5.73 inc VAT).

The only trouble was that all around the holes for both the spare wheel carrier and the reg plate had started to get some surface rust, along with the bottom edge of the door.

Out came the flapper paddle. karust, hammorite and spray cans.

I've sanded it back to bare metal, karusted, two coats of zinc rich primer and so far eight coats of top coat. Going to add another 8-10 coats tomorrow as well, then spray some stone guard to the area behind where the spare sits.

The picture don't tell the whole story

When I first used the spray paint it came out a bit too thick. perhaps I hadn't shaked the can well I enough? But anyway, to the left of the boot door handle the paint hasn't laid down too well.

I did try rubbing it back down with some P600 paper but the damage had already been done.

TBH, the car is full of dings and scrapes. So long as it looks ok from a distance and it aint rusting, then thats ok by me. It's an everyday tool, not a show queen.

why so many coats of paint? if you put too many coats on without sufficient drying time you end up with thinner entrapment which makes the bottom layers of the paint stay soft and never fully dry. 3 coats of paint will take roughly a month to fully dry and harden. if the paint doesnt dry properly it will fail to stick to the primer and will eventually fall off under its own weight. 3-4 coats is more than enough, allowing 10 mins between coats for the paint to flash off.

great decision to stick some stonechip on the inside of the door, this should stop rust from returning. if you can, its also worth sticking some sealant around the bolts before you slide them into the holes - this will stop water seeping in and also prevent rust

Thanks for the tips

At both spanner wielding and painting, I'm afraid that I am a rank amatour, but always keen to learn new tricks.

I was going for so many coats as I'm just doing a very thin layer each time.

Fixed a burst oil cooler hose

if you've only done very thin layers with plenty of flash time you should be ok and it should dry down after a while. dont bother polishing it for about 2 months tho, you'll probably find it keeps dulling off as it dries. painting is a nightmare, ive been doin it over 10 years an im still learning an findin new ways to do things!!

Cleaned the Rangie carpets and got all the oil out of them

Fitted the EGR plate thingemy and replaced a split top hose.
Also leveled my back door as it wasnt shutting properly.

Got a new drag link fitted and sorted the broken exhaust/manifold gasket (can now hear the turbo working nicely & she's got her oomph back), fitted new side light bulb ... took her for an MOT this afternoon & she passed

Changed the oil, oil filter and fuel filter.
Sposed to take 6.85 litres, but 6 litres always brings it up to the max.
Got the correct sump washer this time, so no more drips on the driveway.
Splashed out and treated it to genyewwine LR filters.

Tried the lift pump that Boydy gave me but it dun't fit.

filled it with deezil.

put some new stickers on

Polished 90% of the green lane scratches out of the paintwork, cleaned the carpets and washed it .
Cant go anywhere in it cause petrol just went up again so that means that the gas is goin up as well and just checked it and it's doing 130 miles on 24 quid which int as good as I thought it would be

This tank full is going to be used at quarter throttle and never going over 2000 rpm and we'll see how it goes.
3.9 V8 Auto by the way.

changed the lights in the speedo binacle,put the new ones in and guess what some dont work so will take it out again tomorrow,

A window chanel came off the front window.. but despite the fact of having 4 spare doors in the garage i gave it a go in repairing with my MIG welder for the first time...

what a ****y job hey?!?!? but it does the job!




I think the lanes on Sunday were a bit rough...as the chanel off the rear window came off as well..

I put new shiny side steps on my mrs's Freelander in the pouring rain!! soaked to the skin but well pleased with them. and i think she is happy with the new look

Never ever will i lye down in a puddle ever again!!!!
