What have you done to your Freelander today

Pity you're not a bit nearer
Been having a look at prices, some one asking 145 quid for a used one
I'm thinking 50 quid would be more realistic
I'd put it up on here in the 'for sale' section. If closer, I would have definitely had it!
Or come along to our planned Freelander meet and bring it with you ;). I'll take it home from there!

So my question is: when installing [or refitting] an ABS sensor what gap should there be between the reluctor ring and the end of the sensor? I used a small piece of plastic about 1mm thick - slipped that in-between the ring and the sensor, pushed the sensor onto that plastic the tweaked it back a wee bit and then removed that piece of plastic.

Is that gap critical? should the sensor be closer to the ring or further back?
I would imagine it would need to be closer. I replaced one on my BMW this time last year because it had rubbed on the reluctor ring. I put a spacer under the new one which was less than 1mm thick and it didn't work. I took the spacer out and it's been fine since

Anyone tried spraying Vienna Green code 751 ???

Now on second mix to match aerosol from a company I have used many times before and it is still too green. The original colour is a gold / green / grey.

The last spray is the best, hoping with many coats it will blend in. Supplier has admitted an error on the first one.
I got good results on the Tonga green 1.8 I flipped over Covid. I can't remember the paint brand now, but it was a perfect colour match, and the clear coat went on as flat as the factory finish.

I'm thinking of changing my oil today
It's a 2009 TD4 and I would like to know if the oil has to be speshull
Do I have a DPF for instance, I have 5w 30 oil in stock VW spec so will that do ?
thanks

I took the plunge today and took the FL1 to have the codes read. The prob I've got is that after fitting a replacement clutch I had the 3 amigos :( Managed to get 2 of them to 'go' but was left with the yellow HDC lamp on. I've recently replaced the suspect ABS sensor [FLH] and that brought the 3 amigos back!.

The code reader showed that there were a lot of historic codes which were cleared. The mechanic is experienced with LR but hasn't encountered too many FL1s. Codes suggested a possible FLH ABS issue.

So my question is: when installing [or refitting] an ABS sensor what gap should there be between the reluctor ring and the end of the sensor? Do we lube the sensor and the copper cage prior to installing?
ABS sensor removed cleaned lightly lubed and refitted - pushed onto the reluctor ring and that backed off just a 'tad'.

3 amigos GONE. :)

HDC works as it should...

Very happy

Being a 2009, I don't think it'll have DPF (my MY2009 hasn't).
I went with Castrol Magnatec on my last change - I'd rather spend a few quid more on a decent brand.

It needs to meet a Ford standard. I'll try and dig it out...

LR specify an oil which meets Ford specification WSS–M2C934–B for DPF equipped vehicles, and WSS–M2C913–B or C without a DPF. The 5.9L capacity is the same for both grades.
I've no idea if the VW specification would be OK, but normally a DPF vehicle needs a low ash oil. Some VW oils are known as extra life, which has lots of anti-wear additives, but again I don't know how that would effect the FL2 engine.

For conformation if a DPF is fitted or not. Look at the 8th character on the VIN. If it's a B then no DPF is fitted, if it's a C, then a DPF is fitted. This is correct up to 2011MY.

Being a 2009, I don't think it'll have DPF (my MY2009 hasn't).

No. There's no DPF fitted, which is why I chose that model year. ;)

The oil filter housing is a bit awkward to get off.
Most use a flex-head spanner (27mm)

Investigated knocks and rattles from the front suspension today. Whipped off the drop links and went for a quick spin. The links were pretty tired and most of the noises were eliminated, except the worst knock. New HD links on order and the search for the culprit continues. Prime suspect = OSF strut mount

Before you condemn the top mount or bearing, whip the coolant bottle off and check the top nut is tight. Allen key in centre to hold. I had one that needed a new lock nut and unscrewed on its own !!

Never had to get to mine on the F1 so unsure, but on the F2 you need a cut-away socket to turn the nut and hold the allen key in place. You just can't get the angle / depth with a spanner.

... and don't over-tighten!!!

You're right
Managed to get a 27mm socket on it and free it off a bit but then realised that as I unscrewed the filter top it would wind out and jam on the radiator housing so it has to be a spanner
I don't have a flexi head 27mm spanner so I've ordered one from amazon, be here tomorrow.
Oil needed changing, luckily I have a couple of drums of 5w30, I'll run it on my Ireland Scotland road trip then drop it out for more new stuff. :)
