What have you done to your Freelander today

My Alfa has never been poorly yet either, I must just be lucky but I did win the raffle for a bottle of single malt scotch at our shooting club so its fate that the lottery is soon!
 
Changed a few filters, found a pin hole in my radiator. Something else to add to the to do list!

Hmmm... 159? Last year or the year before I heard that Alfa topped VW on reliability scores. Now I know VW sell a heck of a lot more, so numerically more chance of failure, but they got on the quality thing before the 159 was launched by poaching the chap from BMW in charge of M division and his first task was to sort reliability and the 159 scores very highly in this regard. I was going to get a Sportwagon instead of the Freelander but fate decided otherwise. :cool:
 
I'd love a current Alfa, but they're all FWD and therefore crap lol, only FWD I'd have would be a Cooper S, immense amount of fun to drive!

I am well aware that "one swallow, a spring doth not make". However my decision is not based purely on mine. I believe, as mentioned previously, that it is not the individual car, and yes you can get lucky, but the inherent design which is flawed. This has been exacerbated by poor build quality to make a bad vehicle.
These failings can, to a certain extent, be reduced, by constant vigilance, but care and a good maintenance schedule will not eliminate all potential catastrophes!
If you are prepared to pamper it like a prima Donna; check all fluids every time you go out in it, check the drive train monthly and are prepared to do some fairly major work on it yourself, or have deep pockets, then it is ok; but you must go into Freelander ownership with your eyes open.
You have seen the number of noobs come on here, tearing their hair out.
I, for one, want a reliable daily drive that I can jump into and drive, without having an apoplectic fit every time I hear a new squeak or noise.

I am also not talking about general wear and tear. Normal wear and tear does not include subframe mounts ripping out. The weakest point in the dive chain destroying the rest of said drive train. A sensitive and temperamental cooling system which measure coolant temperature after it's been cooled! Those are all basic design faults.

Because I have 2 discoveries. Both are weekend toys. One is in the process of a full ground up rebuild - see my avatar.
I expect them to fail regularly. They are not used as daily drives. They are used and abused. I am not talking of failure due to abuse, I am talking about inherent design flaws.

LOL,,Its true of so many manufacturers these days, quantity not quality is the main focus, we are all now at the point with Most Freelander 1's where the lack of build quality and poor looking after by previous owners are now rearing there heads, I do think that compared with many cars people are expecting too much from a Freelander if they expect it to be a silent smooth ride, they do creek and rattle and groan from time to time, so would you if you were built by Land Rover in the late 90's early 2000's..

As you say "Eyes wide open"...for anything built since about 1995..

all modern things built by accountants, not by people with a passion for perfection..as they were in the olden days..
