I find I develop an attachment to them
And that is the whole point of all of this work with elderly and needy vehicles... We build a relationship with them through the work that we do. Some of my classics and the F1 now too!! Have had my fingers on every nut and bolt. I feel very uncomfortable driving something I don't understand and something I wouldn't be able to fix or at least understand the fault!! I keep many of my old cars for ages then sell them when I run out of space. I had a 1983 XR2 for 25 yrs and a Ford 100e that was in the family from new in 1957 till sold in 1980. Not going to even think about electric until bit more proven. I predict scrap yards full of 5-10 Yr old vehicles with knackered batteries. Just like laptops.... How environmental is that!! Haven't seen an Avenger on the road for yonks. Where in SE were you Nodge? We moved from Woodley, Reading. Love it here.

If I have to fix it, then I like to understand it. We have a lease car as our family transport, as it's worry free motoring.

Electric is getting there. All that happens as the batteries age, is the range steadily reduces. Once no good for vehicular use, the batteries will eventually go on to provide power for domestic power systems, and when too depleted for that, they'll continue in things like torches and garden lights and stuff. There are companies that will re-purpose them now, and this will increase as demand increases. ;)

Just like laptops....
Unfortunately most laptop batteries are cheap and pushed too hard, so have a very limited life.
However there's a whole community which actually repurposed old laptop batteries too.



How environmental is that!!
Batteries that aren't suitable for repurposing can be recycled into the raw materials, ready to make more batteries. ;)

There are a few about, but mine hasn't been on the road for nearly 30 years.

I moved down from Redhill, Surrey in October 99. I'd definitely not move back now. The quality of life down here is so much better.
 
It seems batteries have a much easier life in electric vehicles and dead batteries appear to be a rare thing, but I am not on EV forums, so I don't know what other's experience has been. However our eUp! has been ideal for my wife's daily commute in London. While it's only done about 11k in 2 or 3 years, its typical usage are the type of daily short trips that tend to do much harm to conventional ICEs. Mind you, it'd be hopeless out of the city because it is a "first generation" EV, and its range is pathetic. Tesla Model S's have a much heavier pasting, and they seem to keep good charge despite stratospheric mileages and frequent fast-charging.

Poor battery life in EVs may be over stated, but time will indeed tell. :)

How did yer get the spanner out?
 
Well the long flexible grabber thing I had wasn't long enough to get through the bonnet close catch hole so tried getting a small wooden skwewer and going under the air con condensor rad and seeing if I could push it back under the main rad, big mistake, ended up pushing some already corroded fins on the air con condensor rad straight through! So now a 12cm section of the fins on the bottom are missing, however it did leave me a gap to get my spanner through with a combination of skewer and grabber! I have condensed a very frustrating few hours down of course. At one point was going to take the grill/bumper off, just to find several screw heads were chewed up.

Anyway with spanner out I then went and ordered a Rolson magentic pick up tool just in case!
 
Santa has been. Can't use it as need extensions for rubber pads to fit chassis rails without arms hitting sills and installer didn't bring any. Duhhhh.
 
they all came out easily,it was the bits I had to take off to get the inlet manifold out
I don't have very large hands but I still couldn't get my hands in ,the bracket holding the fuel filter
is a bit of overkill as well.it comes off in three pieces.i know for next time the bits I need to remove.
at least it`s done,only taken three years to pluck up the courage.:)
 
So far I have checked the IRD, dropped the oil, i am about to give it a bit of a clean (IRD no oil haha) then refil) Did make the fatal mistake of removing the filler plug while the car was on an angle and up on the ramps - and ended up covered in oil haha
 
did the thermostat mod.
a 32mm i.d .. 38mm o.d. .. pipe .. were handy in getting the thermostat seated inside the hose
a perfect fit ..
( t'were a vac.cleaner attachment plastic tube )
be the 1st time i've removed the intake manifold
thought i might have to clean it out .. but no ..
were only a thin film of oil in there .. and on the inlets
no 'gunk' build-up .. egr removed at 37k .. now has 180k on clock
( the egr was fairly gunked up at the time of its removal )

gave the towbar / rear subframe / fuel cradle .. a lick of paint
