What have you done on your 90/110/130 today?

Well .. I got a FiP rebuilt by Diesel Bob around October last year and took my D90 in to get it fitted last Friday.
Easy job, whip the old pump out, hold everything steady with the special tool, plonk thenew one in, fit a new accellerator cable, jobs a good'un.
Should I take the front cover off and have a look at the belt (said Jammer)
No, it shouldn't be beccesary (I say) and sent him a confirmation eMail .. I still think that it won’t need a timing belt as it was an LR rebuild in 2014 less than 20K miles ago …
I dropped the car off and a couple of days later ..

Well ..... when Jammer took the old pump off he noticed the bolt heads were somewhat rounded and there was a bit of fluff so he too the front cover off anyway to have a look ....

Well that turned out to be more of a challenge than I expected!
The pulley bolts on the old injector pump were hugely overtightened and the heads partially rounded so I had to remove the timing cover to extract those. I am glad I did as the timing belt was worn with plenty of rubber debris filling the timing case. It was not an original Land Rover timing belt, was set too loose and the valve timing was slightly retarded so I think someone had changed it and made a right hash of it.

I have fitted the new injector pump, that went on fine. I fitted a new timing belt and also replaced the tensioner as the bearing sounded rough. The idler pulley seemed fine so I just refitted that. The idler stud thread was damaged so I fitted a new stud.
One of the timing cover bolts was missing as the thread into the timing case had been stripped. It’s a blind hole so I have just left it as there are plenty of bolts around it holding the cover down.

The mudshield that is pressed on the back of the crank pulley is missing, ERR2100, it keeps debris away from the timing cover oil seal. They do sometimes come loose and rattle so perhaps the previous mechanic just binned it. They are around £20+vat. I have not refitted the pulley yet as it has a huge torque figure and I don’t want to do it twice so let me know if you want me to get an ERR2100 mudshield in.

I noticed that the auxiliary belt was shredded on one side and about 2/3 its normal width. The cause is the power steering pulley running out of line. You can move the PAS pump hub back and forth about 10mm so it looks like the pump has an issue.

Holy crap, why can't people do the job right in the first place ?

So new flinger and PAS pump (refurb) ordered
Anyway, the new FiP and Dayco belt looks schweet :)

Fitted a Britpart one the other week and it works fine, aslong as you pull straight on the handle. I did fill the cable with oil first so it won't rust up this time, hopefully!
Genuine cable as a spare in the garage.
 
Yesterday drove the Ninety to Goodwood for the 80th Member's Meeting. Four hours driving the bus, twelve hours of glorious Goodwood on a Spring day. There was some tremendous heat qualifying and racing. The leading Ford Capri's, Camaro's, and Rover SDI's never used to be this quick...the winning Capri was just blistering fast, trail braking coming into Madgewick and carrying huge speed on into St. Mary's...just superb. Later in the day the GT1 demonstration was superb...especially the thunderous tone of the LMP Marcos :) The old Ninety as brilliant as ever but the indicators decided to throw a wobbly as nearing Goodwood...tested the hazards too, no play...so guessing the hazard/indicator relay has come to end of life :(

I too was there, sadly not in the old Defender - too far! Got back in at midnight after a long and splendid day - I tried a new F-Pace p400e PHEV for the weekend, rather comfy I must say…

I tried a 1962 SIIA on Saturday, one of the Goodwood jobbies on the little off-road course. I'm in Darnley so was hoping to add 30pts to the team fun thing but dropped 3pts on the first twin sleeper test...approached not 100% true and dropped the S!!A's arse end off the sleepers. My son managed 25pts which was ace for his first time driving an SIIA. When we finished I was so keen to see how he'd done, asked his instructor fellow...he said 25pts, then asked me, "27pts..." He then promptly upped son's score to 28pts just to beat his old man. We all had a great big laugh at this, shook hands and scooted up the bank to Lavant to watch the GT40's.
