Trying to fit new stub axles, put the brass bush on but it will just not engage round the sleeve on shaft, the other bush slips straight on, think I must of slightly damaged it putting it in,

Check the thickness of the bush and the depth of the recess in the stub to make sure the recess is deep enough. With it pushed in as far as it will go is the circlip groove visible?
 
In fact when you say the other bush slips on are you talking about the original or another new one for the other side?
 
Certainly sounds like you have a damaged bush then
Well I have a damaged brand new stub axle now as after missing a hit and hitting my hand with the hammer I lost my temper and beat it to fu;;;k .; :mad: then tried to put the other bush in second stub axle but made the same mistake again, it will not fit.
So what's the correct way to get these Brass / Bronze bushes in as they are quite soft for hitting in, I did use a block of wood but obviously did not get it right . ???

a press,soft metal soon balloons with hits , little hits rivet ,big single hits move stuff, though some poorer parts now do need sizing after ie with a ream

Thanks, Mine has had soft hits , little hits, and big hits, Now need another stub axle, maybe two if I cant remove the damaged bush from second one without damaging it, and another two seals as well.
Anyway Ive learned a lesson, not to loose my temper, just had a bad day alround really. Got a Mate with a press will try that next time.
Would it be possible to try and go round the second one with maybe a dremill bit to try to get it to slide on ??

we all have those , ive explained to the wife and kids that swearing whilst mechanicing is part of the job,
yes if your careful and get a reasonable finish a flap wheel sander would be better

Will have a go tomorrow, If Im lucky will only have to buy one stub axle.
Only the dog heard me swear ;)

Thought you learned that lesson with the drive members! :):p It's a time consuming and expensive business rebuilding a defender. It's gonna take you twice as long and cost twice as much!
 
If there's just a little bit of 'bruising' on components there's no harm in just filing (or grinding) it off where the burr stops parts fitting together. If they've seriously distorted, it might be better to start again, unless you have a lathe. Once you force bronze bushes into the female component, the hole in the middle can shrink and make it difficult to get the shaft in. This happens with those bushes in the backs of flywheels that hold the nose of the gearbox input shaft, and cause much frustration. So even if they fit the shaft initially, they can tighten up once installed.

Well Managed to save one without swearing at the poor dog:). so only one to buy, will get one already built up. then new bearings and its all finished, ready to start on rear.

I got mine from paddocks too, complete with bearing, CV and swivel kit. Mid job I found that I had no bushing so used the one from the original stub axle.
