Hi all.
I have an automatic TD4 and have always wondered what I would do if I ran out of fuel or it stopped for any other reason and I won't be able to do what I have always done previously years ago and put a manual vehicle in gear and turned the key in order to get the vehicle out of the road and on to the side, out of harm's way?
What the heck do you do with an auto in this scenario?

Can’t get mine out of park without the engine running. Call a breakdown service out or get a winch I guess.

Winching it in park would more than likely break the pawl.

It should come out of park with the ignition on position 2.

The simplest solution, though it may or may not be illegal, is to always carry a can with fuel in it. Even a litre will get you some way off the roadside.
I think it may be illegal to carry petrol but not diesel, or summat. Then if you stick it in an old oil can who's to know? unless they get really searchy!
Always heard it wasn't a good idea to run out of fuel with a turbo engine but that may be old hat now.

I've got a 22 gallon plastic petrol can in my P38, albeit under the floor.

Who knew i've been breaking the law all this time!! ;) :D

There are a variety of ways to get an auto out of park depending on the make/model. Worst case scenario is the Range Rover Sport. :(
There are ways of dragging them to safety and/or onto breakdown trucks :D

I don’t have an ignition switch just the button, I don’t have a range Rover or a winch so I guess it’s down to the breakdown guys

Button for me, too :(

If it's a Freelander 2, then you don't want to be running out of fuel anyway, as the fuel system will require bleeding with a primer pump. The EDC should however cut the engine out before the tank gets low enough to draw air in, as it can damage the fuel injection system.

I always carry a 5L can of diesel in my car. It's only ever been used when teenage family members have been stoopid enough to run out though

A lot of modern cars won't let the starter engage unless your foot is on the clutch and/or brake
Best bet is to stop at a fool station when that really stoopid light comes on the dash

Apart from in very exceptional circumstances, I think people who run out of fuel have the same mindset as people who wait until 4pm on Christmas Eve to do their Christmas shopping.

Good point Col. I'd never get near to running out of fuel, and I'd never do my Christmas shopping that early. Bloody fools the lot of them ;)
