What goes in this hole!?!?

This is a pic of the underside of my 1996 300tdi. Should there be a plug/bung in the hole. If so what part number is it as the last two I've ordered have been wrong. Thanks, Andy

Should it be in there? Or should I be worried that it's not in there?
This is my first defender, so forgive my lack of knowledge

Unless you go through deep water you don’t need to worry.
The bung just stops water getting onto the clutch when wading.

Thanks for your response, that's put my mind at rest!

You should remove the bung after wading so the oil from various leaks can drip out and not fill the bell-housing with oil. Which would be bad for the clutch.

There are two drainage/wading holes .. one bottom of the front timing cover and the other bottom of the clutch bell housing (the one you found).
Leave the holes 'open' unless you plan to go through water that is 500mm or more deeper or if you are driving through a lot of sloppy mud and puddles (say at a pay and play day) and then take them out when you get home/after you have washed under the engine etc.
