Depends on the rattle - Tapping is normal while the Hydraulic Valve Lifters pump up again with oil flow...but a 'Chain' type rattle is usualy the VANOS chain rattling on the guide....Think rattle on start up is a well-known feature of the V8 petrol and nothing to worry about. It is the tappets before the oil get to them I think (Saint V8 put me right?)
My 4.4 V8 gets Triple R or Fuchs 5W40 fully synth. (Triple R part no. was XGF 050 - £25 for 5 Ltr: Fuchs £32 for 8 Ltrs)
5W40 fully synthetic in mine. 150k on the clock and if left a good while will give a momentary rattle, but otherwise runs like clockwork. I would expect to hear a constant rattle at tickover if the VANOS is playing up. As Saint says the chain tensioners can be a little soft and changing these can be a bit of a cow, but I`m sure if we wait long enough, Saint will have a "how to" to guide us through
The popular choice seems to be 5w40 fully synthetic. Is it worth using the Lucas Oil Products (UK) - Heavy Duty & High Performance Lubricants Lucas Oil Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer with the new oil when doing the oil change?
How much oil is needed for an oil and filter change on the 4.4 v8 engine?
Somebody else asked that, and was told 20 litres. Then he came back and said i bought 20 litres and have 11.5 litres left. The bloke that told him 20 litres said, "That's funny, so did I".
The old ones are the best.
Got his answer though. If he has a calculator that is.
He's only done adding up not take away's
