My local LR main dealer has a 2007 Defender 90XS (Ford engine version) mileage 4,000 for £18995. Seems cheap, but they say that's the price they are selling them for.
I'm more than happy with our '06 90 CSW TD5...but I've been offered £15K for it by one of my customers (it's like new, mileage 15,000)
So....£4k to pay is it worth changing?

Sell the TD5 fer £15k, spend £5k on a decent 300TDi and put £10k in the bank.
Yer'll end up with a better motta, stop losing stoopid amounts through depreciation and be able to have a fookin good **** up.

Actually that's not such a bad idea...my friend has a really nice '98 300TDi SW and it's arguably better to drive than the TD5. But it cost her £10,000 last year from one of the famous LR dealers that advertise in all the magazines. I think for £5,000 I might not get such a good one!

I'd do what Trewy said. I was looking for a '98 year Tdi for ages but couldn't find one with a good enough chassis for the right money. I ended up spending 4.5k on a near mint '89 v8. Buy one the right age and save a fortune on car tax too.

No don't lissen to them. Sell yer TD5, buy a decent 90 that yer can knock about in fer five grand, an send the rest of the money to me fer safe keeping till yooove had yer labotomy.

there have been loads of problems wit hthe ford engined "puma's". I wouldnt buy one just yet, hang onto the TD5. Bloke on another forum has one back at the dealer at the mo, clutch gone within 7k, constantly blowing oil seals on the gear and tranny box, overheating, vacuum pump just gone...

dont think hes done much mileage in it either

Its all relative.

If 18k is not a huge deal for you then go and buy it! Life's too short.

If having 10k in the bank will be a big deal to you then do that!

what do you plan to do in the td5??
is it a shopping car or is it gonna be used as defenders should be used?
i would feel a little uneasy after spendeng £18k and then playing around on some pay and play days or taking it off road
but hey you might be one of those secret millionaire people that have loads of dosh
if not buy an old one like everyone else has said and have loads of pennys in the bank

Definately. That's far too much money for an off road vehicle. Unless it's got tracks, armour plating, and a 50. cal. 5k will buy you an excellent 90 300 if you look in the right places, and think of what you could do with the 10k you've saved!

for 5-7 grand ur get ur hands on probably a pristine 300 90!

10grand in the bank!pah!10grand on a vacation mate, thats more like it.

Buy the new one, I have a 2008 110 Puma engine and its the best, LR quality control is no better than its ever been but don't listen to the crap about dodgy new engine etc etc. Its a remapped transit engine, built by ford, simple as that. One of the largest by numbers manufactured engines in the world and very very relaible.

With anything else going wrong, you'll have the warranty or recalls. Its quieter, its quicker and if like me its the only vehicle you have for work and weekends it makes better sense.

In 5 years it will still be worth more than any 4x4 and its a real step up (internally) from previous defenders of the last 25 years.

My old 200tdi 90 was fantastic, but for distance or just a bit of day to day sanity I still needed something a bit quieter or more civilised, now I just have the 110. No more 2 car family.
