I'm looking to but a P38 4.6 what faults to i need to look for and what age and models best?? cheers Nick:D

The most obvious things would be air suspension, check for any leaks which would suggest perished springs and possibly a tired air compressor if its an older model wor even has a few miles it should have had them done at some point if not they most definatelly will.
As its a v8 your after check for any signs of over heating as this would suggest a very expensive repair bill, i dont have a v8 so dont know much about them.

Make sure that the heaters in the car work go through hot to cold and hot again if you just get cold or just hot this would indicate a knackered blend motor which isnt a fun job and costs an arm & a leg at main dealers.

A full sevice history is your best bet with lots of receipts the more the better then you know its been looked after and had lots of money spent.

Go through all of the gears hi and lo make sure it pulls in every gear and take it for a nice long drive get it on the motorway and floor it, it should pull like a train.

Hi.
The v8 is really just the same as any other engine, except they really like frequent oil changes so service history is important, i do mine every 3000 miles, and they dont like cheap ignition leads. It should warm up fairly quickly, say 7-10 mins to hit the middle of the gauge and stay there. There should be no rattles from under the bonnet and the only thing i would add is that it should go up and down smartly if all is ok with the air suspension. If you've not owned a classic and this is your first Range Rover and V8 hopefully it will make you smile like mine does when you get the chance to drive it properly on or off road. Oh and make sure all the warning lights go out for Abs and traction control as they take a few yards.

Cheers, Nick.

Main thing to look for which may spell trouble is if the driver has a past history of changing cars more frequently than his undies. As long as he does not have a history of "Landy Killing" or the ability to spell doom and disaster within warranty then all should be ok :D

hi,

If you looking at a V8. idealy I would check for the basics oil in water, thick smoke on hard excelleration. and if you can put a sniffer on the coolent system to check for exhaust gasses in the coolent. Also listen for worn cam shaft and tappet noise.

Idealy if you can get a garage with Autologic, Rovacom etc to go with you. If they are a genuine seller they shouldn't have problem with you reading is life history. All though this will give you a fair idea of any faults. They could be years old fixed and put to bed but the memory has not been cleared down.

Hello Nick, one other important point, Make shure you get the correct access code just in case the p38 goes into super lock mode (See EKA in the hand book) the 4 digit pin should be written in a small card!!!!!
