What do i look out for when buying Disco

Hi, i am new to this site and to (possible) Discovery ownership, i'm sure that the most of you have heard this a thousand times, but are there blindingly obvious pitfalls when looking at a 2nd hand (2000 ish) diesel Discovery. I basically want a vehicle that will transport a few mountain bikes (in one piece) and do not intend to do too many miles per annum so the mpg is not too important. We already have a BMW 520d for family use so i intend taking the rear seats out of the Disco as it will be for use by myself only. Any help or would be greatly appreciated as there seem to be an awfull lot of disgruntled Discovery owners on the net and i need some good honest sound advice from "proper" owners ....thankyou.


If god didn't intend for us to eat animals, why did he make them from food ?

At this Point my response would be do a search FFS. But I is feeling benevolent soooooo.

Rust Rust and more Rust. especailly sills inner and outer, floor pan along edges, particularly rear footwells on the 3doors. and reafr wheel arches on the 5 doors, Rear Boot floor, front inner wings and rear body cross member. also body mounting brackets.

engine wise as long as they start instantly from cold and pull well without smoking then they tend to be pretty bombproof.

:5biagree: The rust only seems to affect the bits between the bumpers that arn't ally they corrode in a completly different way Oh and:welcome2:
 
Are there no problems with auto boxes, front diffs, suspension etc. The only reason i ask is that a friend has a 2006 Range Rover and he has had problems with all of the above, but they were all covered under extended warranty so he's not too sad !!. The cost of potential Discovery ownership in £'s and pence is not going to be a whole heap of cash, but i don't want to have to spend a fortune on the upkeep of a potential money pit and regret the day i ever laid eyes on one.

Buy a van!!:D
 
but vans are so ........ van like ..... and won't look as good as a freshly polished Discovery outside the business or house, i know i know image isn't everything but you have gotta try at least

Thats one of the reasons why i got my disco, but mine is a commercial one oh that'll be a van then :doh: with 4 wheel drive and good for towing :D

On a std disco no not really never had an auto so can't comment on the autobox. and complete new suspension system (4 springs & 4 shocks) for a 200 or 300tdi int gonna cost yu much more than £100.
