What did you do with your Range Rover today

Got the doris to give me a hand looking for a bit of play in the steering, while she wobbled the steering wheel I groveled about looking for play in the system. Steering box seemed to be OK, then quite a bit of play found in the drop arm ball joint.
Easy fix, so ordered a complete unit, I have a ball joint repair kit to rebuild the original once off as a spare. I'd already bought a replacement steering damper so fitted that while I was in the mood.
I keep a detailed log of all work done, so looked at the odometer to record it and she has just tripped 173000 Km, thats 107497 miles.:)

While there noticed oil/grease weeping out of one of the swivel seals. :(:( Oh well, another job on the list, if I'm going to do the seal It would make sense to do all the bearings/seals at the same time, I think I'll wait for the weather to warm up a bit first though, in the meantime I'll just check the swivel levels.
 
Nothing, again :D just saying. But have decided I have a bad front diff as iv got the whine at pull away and slow speed sounds like an electric train pulling out of the station and slowing down again. Will try my new trusty p38 breakers for a replacement but will try removeing the front prop 1st to see if it makes any difference, job for Thursday afternoon if the weather improves.

Yes I did check my diff oil levels last engine oil change :rolleyes:
 
Ordered new windscreen top strip after it came off on the motorway. Bloody sods law after saying about it to another user! :rolleyes:
Ordered 8 new trim clips too.
Discovered why my O/S mirror wobbles at speed. There is no plastic steady in the back of the glass and the motor is damaged. Someone has kindly filled the mechanism with silicone sealant to stop it flopping about although the mirror does still move ok. Ordered a colour coded complete used mirror off the bay with a N/S one to match as wanted painted mirrors anyway. Must look at the PS pipe which is weaping too.

Yes and no. Insurance will cover the crack. Still cracked but being sorted tuesday. I’m hoping it doesn’t start leaking again after they do it :( as that’ll be a right faff. Had to order a new O/S mirror glass too as the new mirrors heating tabs were broken off.
 
Went out this morning to a frosted up car. Started the Red one up and the o/s heated mirror wasn't working. Popped the mirror off to check if I had power to it. Touching the positive connection I could see arcing between it and the element.Too cold to mess about so swapped it with the one on the Black one Another job for when the weather improves.
 
Changed the steering drop arm today, turned out to be a doddle of a job, all over in 1.5 hours even after having to fab a new tab washer as I forgot to order a new one.:mad:
What really helped was using a family size puller to get the old one off, an old boy I know gave me a couple of snap-on ones when he was having a clear out and I bought some big snap-on spanners off him. Worked a treat though I must say I was flinching a bit as I wound the last few turns on the puller.
So job jobbed, all's well with the world and we go shopping, bleddy rear screen refuses to de-mist, hopefully something simple.
Got home and noticed a slightly damp area under the clutch pedal, run finger across bottom of pedal and yes it looks like the master has sprung a leak.

Why is it you knock one job off and 2 others appear.:(:mad::(:mad: At least she drives in a straight line now. :)
 
Didn’t get the new windscreen fitted today as the poor chap turned up with a non heated one. He was decidely annoyed as I had told the admin team and he had also asked them and they still messed it up so he’s coming back friday.

Stupid people. Why folks don't listen I'll never understand.
Today I drove mine to the Rock, as I sometimes do. Still got that damn intermittent vibration. Im still leaning towards it being an injector :( Tyres are right pressure, alignment done a few weeks ago, at same time as balance. It went away for about 30 miles after the calipers were replaced, then came back , although not as bad. However, the drive to London and back showed that it is still with me. At least now I don't have to drop from 70 to 50 just to hold the steering wheel :eek: She's off to see the RR doctors on Friday, so fingers crossed.

Could it be a propshaft bearing or out of balance? (can't remember if you said it was engine speed or road speed related, I'm guessing road speed)

It's more road speed related but the issue is it's intermittent. I would've hoped when they checked her out, about 3 weeks ago, that all possible mechanical causes would have been investigated. Changing the calipers , reduced the issue but hasn't solved it. Now instead of a very visible 3 to 4 mm , quite harsh vibration, it's a 1mm or so, softer but faster one.
Just wondering, if like the gearbox/injector saga, I have another incidence of two different issues giving similar faults, in the same area. Now one is fixed the other one is getting it's chance to be noticed.
Hopefully, we'll know by Friday :)
 
If it's road speed related it is almost certainly on the running gear rather than the engine.
Have you tried running it held in 3rd for example to see if it happens at a lower speed?
Just one other suggestion, years ago I had a rover 820 which wobbled like hell. I did the wheel rotation as was recommended in those days and suddenly it went away. Turned out, one wheel was ever so slightly buckled and when said wheel was on the front it was a nightmare.
I'd also check your brake disc runout if it got better after new calipers.

Yep tried, knocking it over to 'manual , makes no difference. Wheels were played around with(not by choice!), when the alloys were done up. Like I said , I think once again , I am now looking at two faults originally but now seeking the fault that was being hidden by the caliper fault. I'm confident the boys will eventually find it. I'll mention brake disc runout, and by Friday I'll have googled and learned what that is :cool::D:D:D:D

Addit: Just googled brake disc run out and think it can be ruled out. There is no vibration on braking, only at 70mph approx. Some types of road surface make it worse (no not cobbles ;) ). I can be quite happily sitting at 70mph and surface changes, hello vibration, same surface at a different time, no vibration. The run to London and back, was a nice long run to check if there were any factors that brought the vibration on, but there is no rhyme or reason behind it.
I can only think there is something that every now and then all factors come together and the light vibration appears. The only common factor is road speed.

Had a butchers up under the clutch pedal and yes the fecking thing is weeping, so a new oem master is now ordered. :(:(
While I was faffing about I took out the under bonnet light switch which I thought was duff, just needed the contacts cleaning, a rub with some vasaline and jobs a good-un.
Flushed with success I had a go at tracing the fault with the rear screen heater. I'm getting to be senile, it was cold, I was trying to not want to go and have a pee and I was tired. So I spent 30 minutes cutting and routing new heavy flex to get a good earth point, and then tested it to find I'd dangerously modded the feed. :mad::mad::mad: So it still does not work, but I think a few minutes tomorrow will sort out my cock-up.
