Been off the road for 3 weeks as a trip to N.Wales towing the boat resulted in a trip back on an AA flatbed! No, not the iffy gearbox, but front propshaft let go.
Thankfully not too much damage, but stoved in the transmission sump, lost all the oil and bust the gear linkage. Took this as hint that it was time to change the box as sticky upshift 3-4 hasn't improved after two oil and filter changes and 3 bottles of Lucas :/
Picked up a cheap Daihatsu Sportrak Elxi as a temp runabout and to get to work - crude but effective and cost under a grand including purchase, tax, insurance, two new tyres, tracking and a towbar - budget motoring!
Picked up a replacement transmission (as mine has done 203K) from rangeroverbreakers in Timsbury and a good s/h shaft off of eBay.
Managed to get her out of 'D' and fired her up a couple of weeks back and winched onto ramps and raised suspension to max.
Today started early and now rear shaft is off (and remains of front), crossmember out and geartrain supported by jack and axle stand... Now starts the job of detaching the transfer box and removing old transmission - could be a long day!
I can lift the tranmission solo, but as yet not sure of the transfer box, so need to devise a means to lower and move out of the way without too much manual input...
