can i do the inner tie rod myself? i've read about needing a special tool or risk damaging the steering rack
Talking about fault isoluation, I took the first bit of lunch break to havr a closer look at the fuse box situation. Well, the original one did get off the original harness without cutting. And it is a lot harder plastics than the one on the new harness, which explains why the new one just doesn't clamp as tightly around the fuses, not closing circuits at times.
Next step: remove the front part of the main harness from the car, again, try to get new fuse box of the harness (including cutting, it is trash either way), try to get the original one on WITHOUT cutting, install everything and hope for the best! Could be easy, could take the whole week, who knows?
Anyway, the original fuse box looks a lot more solid than the spare one as well. So I'll use that, including the majority of the dirt and grit, not to jinx anything. And that way, the car might take the harness transplant better. So far, she seems to reject it any way she can!![]()

Inner tie rod is the bit between the steering rack and the outer tie rod. What do you class as the inner tie rod?
The arm that comes off the streering rack to the hub?
JLR like to call a ball joint breaker a special tool

Inner tie rod is the bit between the steering rack and the outer tie rod.
It has the ball joint that screws onto the bar coming out of the rack.
Special tool is essentially a very long socket, i think
looks like they call it a drum stick

Following on from this ...
Today I finally got around to opening the bonnet. I wriggled the viscous fan and it was wobbly! That wasn't right so swapped it with the one off my scrapper. Took it for a test drive and nothing. We'll see how it goes this week.
I the meantime, look at the fan! Got it off just before it exploded I reckon.

Had a few months of relatively trouble free motoring so all good. And I'm writing this in the dark, opposite side of the house, and under sheets so hopefully the spiteful bitch won't hear me thinking it.
But I did do the gearbox filter and oil and the transfer box oil today. Was going to do the diff oils as well but some git in work had taken the allen key I needed to get them open. So said **** it and came home for cake and coffee.......
Thats all I useAre they not just 1/2" drive sockets?
I thought they were as well but apparently the drivetrain used on earlier <06 cars used H14.Are they not just 1/2" drive sockets?
