What did you do with your Range Rover today

What about it? The likelihood of two random indicator stalks being faulty is slim to non. So that clearly rules that out. So it's either the wiring from the dimmer on the stalk to the instrument cluster or there is a problem on the circuit board of the IC.
I'll be able to test the continuity of the circuits nearer the weekend all being well.
Just been looking at the instrument panel illumination in RAVE (E2, page 4 on my copy).

As far as I can see power / signal for the panel illumination comes from BECM signal on terminal 7, connector C258 of the BECM. That then splits 2 ways at splice S205 and goes to terminals 4 and 14 on the instrument cluster. 4 feeds the message centre, 14 goes, via various routings, to the 6 panel bulbs, in 2 sets of 3 (presumably for redundancy, you should only lose half at a time).
Then the panel lights all earth, via connectors 7 and 17 on the cluster to earth point E254. So if you have lost all panel lights I think you need to check earthing point E254 (or the wires to there from both 7 and 17), or the feed in at 14 from splice 205 for loss of power.

Unless I am reading those diagrams completely wrong. I may be as I can't figure out how the dimmer affects it all unless it signals the BECM to vary the feed in to the whole set up. In which case that is somewhere else in the wiring but means you could be looking in the wrong place all this time? If the BECM varies the feed according to the dimmer signal, and it thinks (due to a short / open) that the dimmer is set to off, it is all doing exactly what the signals to it say it should?

RAVE J1, page 1, Dimmer switch says illumination level is stored by the BECM, so it looks like that is the source of your woes. Signal to there being faulty somehow.

RAVE J1 page 6 - dimmer feeds to earth from 2 terminals on BECM. Connector C256, earthing terminal 4 brightens the panel lights, earthing 12 dims them.

If you're reading it wrong then I am also reading it wrong. Because that was my exact take on it too.
Cheers for looking into it for me. I'll check all of those connections, both ends, see where it's all at there, then, if there are no issues there it really only points to one place, as far as I can tell. The BECM.
I'm goingto pull apart the original stalk tomorrow, if I can,and see where corcuit leads to and work from there back through the car.

Full brightness is a bit dazzling - if you can otherwise find / create a 12v or 6v feed and tap that in on the feed to the cluster from the BECM that should at least give you full / partial brightness on the instruments. Best to disconnect the relevant pin at the BECM though in case back feed does something nasty....

It's it with mentioning there is no 'off' only various dim levels

Honestly I don't know but whatever setting it is called, right now the lights are off. What I'll do next time I take the IC out I'll see if I can apply 12v to the circuit and see if it illuminates then. If not, well the board is screwed. If it does, then it's on with the plan of checking continuity on the wires.

Can someone help me out here, I bought an AUX plug, and wire, the 4 wires are Red Green White and Black, I can't see any way for the right orientation, there are no lugs, so it only fits one way, apart from plugging it in and giving it a 50/50 and blowing knowing then I got it wrong, how do I get to know what way to put it in?

You just out the bath before those pics @Dopey ?

Looks like the type of plug you might have had from a CD player in a computer. If i recall it's pos/neg for left and right channels, if you put it in wrong then you'll get left channel from the right speakers

Lowest according to RAVE is 6%, but on mine that certainly looks like off. Bit weird when you do that and lose all sight of the revs and speedo, etc on an unlit motorway at (hmmm) mph!
