What D90 to buy?

Hi guys

Just moved to the U.K from Norway, and now looking to buy my dream car as they are so much cheaper here than in Norway

Looking for a Defender 90, and these two candidates are the most interesting ones.

The reason why I want to go for a so old 90 is because of insurance prices.
Any thoughts on the two candidates and the dealer?
Back in Norway i have owned a Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and a Series 3, but this will be my first Defender.

Neither of them are 2.5 tdi like ad says.
Theyre 2.5 td/19j i think
Csws hold value better though. If I was you I'd check out the land rover forums selling sections as you'll probably find a better deal and more likely to have been looked after. If problems might find out rarther than a garage that'll fob you of too

Neither of them are Defenders, they are both Ninetys.

Both of them are painted up, and have aftermarket wheels, but there are no pics of the chassis. And both are a lot of money for vehicles that age. Unless they are in really good nick.

Myself, I never buy a landrover from a dealer, always try and find a private sale.

I could swear I saw some, although what a waxoyled chassis pic tells a prospective buyer is anyones guess.....

You are right. Just been back, I had only looked at the pics that came up originally, there are more if you open them up.

The chassis pics are not re-assuring. Worst waxoyl jobs I have ever seen. Applied over surface rust and dirt, and they haven't even bothered to do the top of the chassis, where most of the dirt and mud will acccumualate.

Don't worry about appearance of the body too much with a landrover. Or the interior, seat squabs and trims are only a few quid.

Look underneath, and at the condition of the bulkhead. Chassis and bulkhead, engine and transmission. You can not tell those things from pictures, you need to get under it, and most importantly, test drive it.

As Alex rightly says, those are not 200Tdi engines, they are 2.5 TDs, so the dealer is not exactly Honest John.

I do like this though, He specialises in Landies, so he must be a good old boy.

I would not buy either, the CSW looks like a hard top which has just had side windows added, I would not worry about insurance costs, just go for a better Defender.
I have a 2004 Defender 90 TD5 XS, with heated seats and heated windscreen, aircon, part leather seats, electric windows, central locking, etc, etc, it cost me £188 to insure this year with Churchill and this included no claims protection free breakdown cover.

Thanks, i appreciate your advice. I have been qouted up to 3000 pounds for a 2005 Defender due to on street parking, my age, a non-british licence, no claim discount in a different country etc., so I have to take the cost in to consideration. The only factor I can influence that seems to be effecting the price is the age of the car.

Im also thinking about bringing my soon to come Land Rover back to Norway when I move back, which is free if the car is over 30 years old.

I will look for a better one as I would rather invest extra to get a good example then having to do lots of repairs after I get the car.

If you find one to go look at , then make sure to do a vehicle history check via one of the recognised suppliers, RAC etc.
Also look at the MOT history online using the .gov website.

Plus check the vehicle details.
https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla
Finally, find someone who knows about them to go along and have a look with you. There are a few dodgy sellers who are passing off 90/110/Defenders that are not what they appear to be.

I would recommend a TD5, it keeps up with modern traffic very well, especially once remapped. Also, have a look in some of the magazine's like LRO and LRM.

You rough location might help someone point you towards a local car.
As said above chassis and bulkhead is everything the rest is just bolt on stuff, incl engine and gearbox.

Im not sure what the score is in Norway, but in the UK its std practice for dealers to pull your pants down, after all they are in business to make money.

200tdi 1990 to 1993, 300tdi 1993 to 1998, with some overlap on all models, I would go for a car with an original engine as that way you will avoid any pitfalls come export time.

Do not buy in haste you will regret it.

8k will get you a nice part restored with galvanized chassis, just be careful, a lot have been built on peoples driveways who may or may not know a spanner from a wooden spoon. I wouldn't trust a vehicle built by a drive way mechanic.

You can't go wrong with dealers as long as you remember that everything they say is untrue and they will promise anything to get a sale. Good luck.
