Right,I'm on my first landy i can do all the body work in the world on my own but when it comes to looking under it im lost but im learning...

Now,i was driving along yesterday and after i stoped at the lights i noticed a whistling from the engine when i press the accelorator that sounds like the one you get when your fan belt is loose or about to go and when i press the break and im coming to a stop i can feel her chucking and it feels like its coming from directly under the froon seat??

Is a 1973 chassis but its a rebuild so body etc is much newer..

now to my point! I was told it was UJ's so if it is where do i find them, what am i looking for, what are they and is there another name??
Cheers:)

yer uj's are the joints in yer propshafts. two on each shaft, one at rear of shaft and one at front. if you grasp the yoke in one hand and the prop in the other hand and try to twist em in opposite directions any wear will show up as movement between the parts of the shaft.

Well if you could hear the sound whilst you were stationary there's no need to start checking your UJ's (universal joints on the prop shafts, or long metal rods which go from your transfer box to the front and rear axles) because they don't turn unless you are in gear and the wheels are moving. Simply revving the engine would point towards it being either one of three things:

1) Usual turbo whistle (what engine do you have?)
2) Fan / alternator belt slipping
3) Clutch slipping

There are ofcourse other possibilities, but these are the best things to check first. If your engine is a turbo diesel it will make a whistling noise. The best way to tell if it's just your turbo is to rev your engine hard whilst stopped and then see if it takes a second (turbo lag) for the noise to appear. If that's the case, then there's nothing to really worry about.

If the noise is a little screachier and happens exactly when you rev the engine, check the tension of your fan belt (which also drives the alternator and power steering pump if you have it.) You should only be able to twist the longest length of the belt (ie. with the longest gap between two pulleys) half a turn, and press it in no more than one to one and a half centimetres.
If it's slack, just loosen the altenator adjuster and slide it out a little, making sure that you tighten it back up really tight so that it doesn't slacken again.

If it's your clutch, the only thing that you can really do is put it in first and come off the clutch whilst revving slightly very slowly. If the vehicle judders it would suggest that you have a worn clutch which may well be touching the fly wheel on the engine a little and would either warrant a replacement, or just put up with it.

One last thing that it could just be is the water pump. I have been advised that they don't actually squeal but I've read plenty of posts on here claiming that they do. A new one is relatively inexpensive and wont take that long to replace yourself.

Where abouts are you?

of course if you mean , as you sed, that you have a whistle while stationary and a cluck when braking these are two different things. its unlikely that yer whistle is yer UJ's but very likely that yer clunk is yer UJ's

Cheers POS

The engine is a 300TDI now i did replace the fan belt and water pump 2 weeks ago which solved my squeeking when i was turning at a slow speed so i dont think its that but when i think about it that squeeking is back..
I replaced the water pump and the fan belt as water was shooting all over the place and the fan unit was about it fall off it was that loose.

So it sounds like the clutch? its awful to manage at the minute but saying that i only have the Landy a few months and compared to all the other ones i have driven its a nightmare not smooth at all!!!

All in all its not going die??

ohh and the whistle is only when i accelorate ie. when stoped nothing but when im speeding up its always there but when i take the foot off it stops

legend,at least i wont be stranded! any thing i can do with it?
But as far as the chucking goes you think its UJ's?

Cheers Slob

Land rovers all clunk a little bit (unless everything is absolutely brand spanking new) because of wear and tear. Make sure that your UJ's are packed with grease (ie. via filling the little nipple / stud with a grease gun) and then just drive it!

If the clunk is worryingly bad and you have checked the joints as Slob suggested. they'll need replacing because eventually that shock will damage the transfer and gearbox.

Nice one,the chucking has only started in the last day and its fairly bad at times..there was always a bit but i noticed the landy started vibrating a good bit more with a heave cycle of vibrations in kind of 1 sec bursts coming from the back section then the nest day the heavy chucking started

I agree that UJs are favourite, but whta vehicle do you have? You say its a '73 chassis, but you have posted in the Defender section.
