Wet Carpet and heater matrix

Morning all, I just picked up a 1999 td5 and amongst other minor problems :doh: its got a wet drivers side carpet, no air con, no sunroofs, no roof bars, so I'm thinking screen , door seals, or possibly heater matrix, but would that be on the drivers side?

To rule out heater taste to see if its sweet like anti freeze . I'd say more like the screen . So also check fuse box under steering wheel they can also start giving you problems if it getting wet

When I wrung out the sound deadening it was bright green so I'm almost sure its the heater but I cant see any drips or sign of leaks, I'll take more stuff out tomorrow to see if I can get a better look.

I have a 300tdi, 97 plate. It had the same issue as you and the drivers side. Luckily for me I have a mate who can change them without having to rip out the dash (by all accounts this is what the dealers quote has to be done) bought a replacement matrix (not land rover) that was of a thicker gauge metal, cheaper than the LR one. He had it for the day and I think it cost me less than £300 including the matrix, LR want about £600-800 i believe.

Probably not much help to you in Essex i'm afraid!

run it up to temperature (ensuring theres some coolant it it), park it somewhere quiet, shut the engine off, stick your head in the footwell. listen for the hissing, then locate it.
mine was a pin hole in the ally pipe where it comes thru the bulkhead, still a pita to sort, but didnt need to shift any dash. (300tdi btw)

Although this is a td5 not a 300 I think you might be right about the pipe coming throught the baulkhead. thats where the sound deadening is wet, looks like it doesn't stay there long enought o soak through the carpet but runs down then lays in the footwell and thats where the carpet gets wet.

I'm sure this is a coolent leak and nothing to do with incontinence, I regularly check my trousers and there's no sign of that ........................................................yet.

In case you were wondering, ethanol is an acceptable antidote. We have a bottle of smart-price vodka in A&E for that purpose!
