Hi there

I've purchased a black sheep cross member for my defender 90. Can anyone recommend a good welder who would be willing to fit the cross member for me?

I've been quoted £335 plus vat. Which seemed a bit steep to me at a local land rover specialist.

Any help would be great. Thanks alot

I cant even think of a decent garage around here for that sort a thing, i did one a few years ago but have niether the time or space these days. Might sound daft but give jls willenhall a ring, see if they know anyone being a proper old fasioned parts shop.

Or try asking if youre on facebook, LAND ROVER Owners Spares Department, seem like a decent group with a handful of local lads.

Thanks mate. I did ask jls, but they didn't have much idea really.

Can't you weld it on yerself then?

I dont havent got the ability unfortunatley. Can get away welding some things, but not structural really. And would like a nice tidy job been as the rest of the chassis is in such good condition. Would love to take it to clive at black sheep, but hes just that bit too far away really. To me 335 plus vat seemed steep? or is it me?

Four hundred quid does seem a tad high especially as you're supplying the bits so it's just labour. There's a garage called Highrange near me that do landys they are on the A444 outside Burton. I always do my own but I don't know if my standards are high enough for someone else. I wanted to get the wife's Nissan Note serviced and Kwik Fit wanted £100 for a normal service or £180 for a 'major' one, the only difference was the major one included an oil change and fuel filter change so I've done it myself for sixty quid using a Bosch filters thieving gits

Im the same Marmaduke. I try to do everything myself (with help from you guys) on the land rover and other vehicles. But this time, its an exception as im really fussy with how the chassis looks. Nothing looks worse than poor welding IMO.

Not when they see how rusted it is or break half the bolts removing the old, or mis-align something and you end up back on their doorstep. Garages HATE work like this as its a risk.

Nothing looks worse ? I wouldn't care about the look of the weld as long as its a good one...I wouldn't do it myself either.. and didn't.. it needs to be aligned and there is all manner of things which can go wrong... not the kind of thing you can do with a laptop in one hand and a welder in another for guidance Especially if you plan to tow/recover. Clive from BlackSheep did mine and he will tell you the horror stories :)
