Welding advice

I just took the plunge and purchased a Clarke 151te. Not because I need any welding but because I want to learn a new skill. I'll get some practice on scrap I've got and then plan on fabricating a new exhaust system for the 110. It seems there's loads of videos online and some very helpful welding forums.
 
The trick is to scratch start it, I.e drag the rod down the steel to burn the first of the flux of and head the rod up , then it will burn the end rather than stick to the steel
