So 14 days later and its time for the MOT *gulp*.

Basic mechanics were done before she was sent off to rambo for him to weld her up.
So shall we take bets on how many failures she will get in the morning?

My welding hmmmm well needless to say I'm glad I didn't attempt the car!!!.
It turns out the welder I got is absolutely crap (had a friend come and check it out. Turns out the 150 amp on the box is really 105 amp so it may have welded a slice of toast ) so went straight back . So going to get a larger one when I can increase my budget by another 100. What would you guys suggest I get. I'll have around 300 ish to spend.

Well will update again tomorrow when I find out the news :)

Ive got 1 from machine mart.get the turbo model to stop it overheating.

Clarke 130 turbo. Gets good weld on 5mm steel which is more than suffice for what i need.

Also the welding site soong has recommended is awesome for any level of welder to get you advice and tips

Hope the MOT went well ...?

Welding machine choice is like most other choices - the more you shell out, the more chance you get something worth having.

Be interested to hear how Rambo got on. Ive got almost 190bar of argoshield in my garage just sitting idle, no disco so nothing to weld. Its nice gas though and id recommend the boc volkszone deal if youve got lots of mig work to do.
Hope mot went well. Where in pembs are you? Im in h.west sometimes and cam stop by if you wanted any second opinions, although I am no expert and have a track record of a few lemons to my name!:D

I've looked at welders sealey mighty mig 150? Or Clarke 135 turbo both seem to be ample for learning and fixing. Still trying to run comparisons on the interweb.

Mot she didn't make it.

Has been postponed till either late today or early Wednesday. Either way I'm itching to get her back so I can do cosmetic jobs on her .. change the window regulators. Clean her up etc.

@ronsealdeath I no longer live in pembs I'm over ogmore vale now but still have family over pembs and all my old work colleagues. I was up north pembs in the 'hills'

When I get her back you are more than welcome to come and see what the work has been done like.
Fair play he has kept me informed every step so far, and as I'm not in a major rush it's no big deal if it takes longer than usual.

Just had a nosy at the specs of these two machines. The Clarke has the better duty cycle and will also take 5Kg reels, so will be cheaper to feed.

However neither have a proper torch - you will be tied to OE tips shrouds and liners - IMHO, you want something with a euro torch.... these come in various lengths.

I know this means more money, but...

Have a look at something like the
Thermal Arc Fabricator 181i 240V MIG/TIG/ARC Welder Package

on the bay of fleas - I know its £650, and its probably too big for what you want, but they do smaller ones....it was just the first proper machine I found. We run one of their larger machines - it has had no issues in ten+ years of use.

Hi Steviebacon,

I recommend B & A Garage, r/o 120 Rhymney Street, Cathays, Cardiff. Tel: 029 2037 7606 and ask for Ben. He's the most talented mechanic I've ever met and is a fair and honest guy. He used to own a Disco too so I'm sure he'd enjoy working on yours.

He's done welding for me before and I've seen his work on other cars and he's very neat to say the least. Give him a call or swing by his garage for a quote. May be cheaper in the long run than buying your own mig welder, rods, safety gear and time. :) And before you might ask - No, I'm not on commission! haha. Just happy to recommend a fair and honest garage that do great work. They are quite a rarity these days so it seems.

Andy.

Cheers for that Disco. I'm having to save some more pennies either way so have borrowed one for now to "play" with.
My car still isn't back *sob*
Getting slightly miffed now. Thankfully it was on an agreed price so I'm glad in that respect.
Cheers for the number Andy I'll keep that in the phone for next time.

I have my haynes manual yay! Lol. 99p so really not whinging on that one.
Regulators . Are there 2 different electrical ones? I've seen them for 20 and 80? Guessing I'll have to wait and see when I get her back as to what ones are on her.
I'm off to play this weekend in a k reg 110 lwb with county pack and being shown some welding tips on gates etc. All strictly on farm land so hoping it doesn't rain too much ;)

Oops!!

Which one? and how much?? I only ask as there is a guy with a D2 on here been quoted £300 for the main front to to back pipe... which "seems" a "little" steep !

(I.E. daylight robbery )

Tbh I never bothered asking. He said something about rear but I had switched off by then lol.
All in one price only extra I've paid for is 2 new rear calipers and a second hand set of alloys and tyres.

So I can't complain

Rambo Is sound.

Now just have to clean her. Sort the blackness out on the bumpers.
Central locking
Window regulators

And a major full service just to make sure

I will do you can also have a nose see what you make of the welding and bits on the car.

I will give her a once over tomorrow so may take her out as well I've got a shopping run to do so may use her instead of the missus clio lol
