Hi All

I have a landrover 90, 2.5 litre petrol.

Last week I noticed a vibration whilst driving between 40-50mph. I found I had 7 loose but seized propshaft bolts, 3 in the front prop and 4 in the rear, so I changed them and everything seemed fine. This evening, driving between 30-40mph there is a light grumbling. Between 40-50mph there is a grating sound when I take my foot off the accelerator, then when I accelerate again there is a slight pause and then a clunk.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy.

That sounds like a fooked diff.

Thanks for the replies. On further inspection tonight, I've rotated both the propshafts by hand and could hear noise coming from what sounded like the gear box. Should I be able to rotate them? There was a good quarter turn play in both propshafts. Plus if I have unknowingly driven with the propshafts loose could that have damaged the gear box or diff? Or should I just check on the uj's and grease up first?

Thanks,

Andy

much more like to have killed the UJs - they are very cheap and easy to change so you might want to change just if only to eliminate them as the source of the noise

I was thinking the clunking and grinding is what loosened the bolts but Sean is right go for the easy things first. Once they are off you will be able to check the play in the gearbox and diff.

Take the props off, and check them there should be no play in them when you try to rotate it holding the flange, then tilt the uj's at 6 and 12 then 3 and 9 and they should be smooth and free, if they are lumpy and tight then chances are the rollers have eaten into the cups and caused little ridges, and that is what you are feeling. Replace them and grease them before you refit the props on the vehicle.

Also make sure the loose bolts are not damaged or the holes in the flanges, coz you will never keep them tight if they are.

Yep, it was the uj's. I've changed one to see how it goes, still got a little vibration but nothing like before so i'll get back under and change the others.
Thanks for the advise and thanks for the link Sean, it made everything sooo much easier.
