I have a strange problem with the ABS on my 1998 300tdi Disco. The ABS light is on all the time. I have followed the instructions on the site to read the fault codes from the dashboard ABS light flashing sequence. This showed 4 faults which related to both nearside wheel sensors. Two faults for each wheel (both the same) Air gap and Connection. I pulled out the two sensors, cleaned them up and replaced them. Reset the ABS light and all looked promising I drove about 1/4 mile and the light came back on and has stayed on since.

I have noticed that if I turn the ignition off and back on whilst the vehicle is moving then the ABS light will go out. But it usually comes back on within 1 minute.

The strange thing is that I went through this ignition on/off sequence as I approached a set of traffic lights which were on red. I came to a complete stop with the ABS light off but about 30 seconds later with no rotation of the wheels the ABS light came on again.

What I am really trying to understand is whether it is more likely that the fault is in the ABS control module/ ABS Relay or at the wheel sensors? It seems strange to me that the the sensors would trigger a fault when the wheels are stationary?

I did notice on one occasion when braking very gently that I could hear the sound of the ABS system kicking in ( ticking noises from behind the dash and at the same time a very light ABS sensation in the pedal. Part way through this strange behaviour the ABS light came back on and the brakes returned to there current normal state (ie no functional ABS)

Any opinions as where to start on this problem would be very much appreciated

Many Thanks
Jon

I haven't checked through all ABS loom wires so I'll start there and see if anything shows up.

It would be fantastic if it turns out to be something simple like that.

Thanks for the suggestion

dunt know much abart abs but am lead to believe that most problems stem from dodgy connections. so it would be wise to check em all before you do anything else
