Hey guys, has anybody retro fitted a webasto heater to a disco, I have searched and the info is a bit thin, Seems though there may be a few webasto experts amongst us, as from here I have been informed that the heaters from BMW, AUDI and VW are no use as they are can Bus controlled and so would require a new ECU to be made operational. But I was wondering if the rover 75 units or those fitted to the gaylander are usable without mods...do they have a simple supply to operate. I am thinking that as I get older and softer around the middle a preheat-er is just the ticket. As an after thought if I could find a disco2 FBH is it BCU controlled. looking forward to some classic replies.:D

If your going to retro fit a Webasto why not a Propex

Good question...never heard of them before, and webasto was a standard fit for some disco's so the fuel pipe routing and brackets are already available....

but its a matter of whats available....didn't intend to reinvent the wheel.

Is that what you use then? do they run on diesel?

Yes fitted one 3 weeks ago and its gas, someone said i would get condensation but no sign of any
with leaking sunroofs condensation would be a minor niggle...but I just goggled them and they don't seem to do a Pumped block heater..They sound great for just heating the interior but the engine would then still need 10-15 Min's to heat up...its a small thing but I would need to install a gas supply. I was naively looking to keep the installation as simple as I could, Landrover has already worked out the fuel, exhaust and intake routing so I am assuming I could just replicate the original.

I have the fitting instructions for a TD5 Defender if you want....

Tom

Cheers Tom that's a great offer, It definitely wouldn't hurt, should give some insight into whats connected to what, does the defender use the BCU to handle all the extras? Like in the Disco would you know. I will PM you my E-Mail or do you need an address.
:)

Does Anybody know if the Webasto Fuel burning heaters fitted to the TD4 and Rover 75 are simple control, eg feeding 12volts in will cause the unit to start, some of the BMW, AUDI and VW units are cambus and need a new ECU to operate as a standalone.

Need to know which second hand units are worth buying and which to avoid.

not sure what progress you got on this, i have fitted one to the p38 i had previously and yesterday fitted one to my discovery 2.

you have the disco 2 aswell so all you have to do is plug it in. the connections are already there.

what i did was a bit different as i am using the ace resevoir as a fuel tank for the FBH and then took a switch live to pin one of the FBH to start it when ignition is turned on.

pin 3 is wired directly to the fuel pump and the plug for the main 12v feed is already there.

you could just install everything in its original location but im running mine on red diesel. plus you will need the ambient temp sensor fitting

Give me a shout if you need any more info

rover 75 ones work a treat!!

The Rover 75 Webasto does have a CANBUS connection on it, but you don't need to use it, the only purpose it seres is for diagnostics (and it's cr@p at that).

If you buy one second hand, be careful the PCB is known to have issues, there are a couple of resistors that give up the ghost, google "French Mike", or take a look on the MG_Rover.org forum, he offers a repair servicec if you're not happy with a meter and soldering iron.

It is also possible to get a timer unit, or a mobile phone based remote start for them, look up Raistlin (75ZTComunity) for the timer unit and the phone remote is French Mike on the MG-Rover.org site.

If you buy new, make sure you get the exhaust pipe as well as the heater unit, unless you can see it is in place on your disco :)

i have a pcb on its way to mike in the morning!!! he only charges £44 quid so its not worth making a mess of it!!

you can buy a cheap remote off ebay for about 6 quid and solder it onto the terminals on the oval timer.

i did that on the range rover!!

cheers for this, I got one off the bay, for a reasonable price complete with pump and exhaust, made a test stand and have had it running, fires up a treat and takes about 15 to 20 mins to get 25 litres to its shutdown temp, so I am well impressed. now just need to fit it.

chers Gav,

I would love to hear some more, I was lucky the heater I bought works perfectly, came with pump and exhaust, got the wiring from the rover 75 club, so know the name of french mike, that a really good club for info about this FBH, so got the remote made, but was already thinking of a GSM sim card type so I can start it from a distance. now if I can get the plumbing worked out....which hoses to get and where they go.

but great advice thanks

Hi , please need help. I'm looking at doing the same, I've purchased a webasto heater from a Rover 75 , I've found all the connectors. But I've no idea how to connect it to the cooling system , which pipes does it connect with? Been looking for photos online

I can send you the Webasto installation manual for the Disco in pdf form. I doubt that it is small enough to attach to this post but I will check when I am at my PC. Regarding the plumbing: there are two hoses that are specific to the Webasto which, effectively, insert it into the primary cooling circuit where it attaches at the back of the engine.
