hi everyone I'm new on here and would like to ask for some help / advise , my FREELANDER 2006 td4 has started to make like a dry bearing noise but I've had the wheel bearings checked and they are OK , was told by the mechanic he thinks it's the gearbox bearings and informs me I will need it reconditioned at a cost of £1200 plus labour any ideas if his diagnosis is correct cheers Mark

Looks like your mechanic's wife is pushing him for a flash holiday so she can post pictures on Facebook!
At least that would be my first reaction if a mechanic told me that.
I'd change the oil in the gearbox - if it comes out grey then there's signs of bearing wear. But what ever I'd see if it makes any difference. I'd want to do it myself so I knew what the oil coming out looked like - but maybe ask to see the old oil if you get a shop to do it.
People talk about mechanics having 'stethoscopes' these days - would appear to be the ideal time to find one that has, and knows how to use it, to pin-point where the noise is coming from.

thats not necessarily unusual ,it might be if drained again a similar found, any more clues like is it the same in all gears

how did he check wheel bearing,has oil in ird been checked, though if it was me after ruling out any other possibilities , if every thing else on the box is ok a fix would mean stripping box and replacing bearing ,likely 200 rather than 1200 but thats modern mechanics and risk adverse culture

FREELANDER now sorted took it to another garage centre propshaft bearings that's all it was not gearbox like other mechanic suggested !!! Grrrrrrr relieved it was just that bloody mechanics lol thanks everyone who contacted me with suggestions to my dilemma cheers Mark
