WD40 alternatives

We have finally run out of WD40, but I read on here a while ago people were using some penetrating oil that is meant to be better than WD40 - does anyone know what it is??

Contrary to popular belief WD (water dispersant) 40 was never formulated as a releasing agent, despite the fact that many people use it as such. Far better to use products intended for the task, such as Duck Oil or Plus-gas.

You are wasting your breath or to be more precise typing fingers. I have said this dozens of times on here nobody takes any notice. ;)
 
About all wd40 is good for us a solvent for cleaning stuff, I have had good success using it and fine wire wool to clean metal items off all compositions in the past.

Otherwise it’s total pap.
 
As Flat said above, and Wammers has mentioned too - WD40 is, IMHO, crap. It's mainly kerosene in any event, so just use that instead....

Or, better still, we use the Ambersil range of lubricants, protectors, cleaners etc, and they are very good, and cheaper than WD. All available on the bay of fleas :)

Plus gas and GT 85 are fine products too, and we're currently using tectane cutting oil on a job ( cheap ), and it's very good for the money. ( it's not castrol superedge blue by a long shot, but it's fine for light machining )

If diesel works ok as a release fluid then WD40 being mostly kerosene will work just as well, being the diesel and kerosene are chemically very similar. I use plus gas myself as it does do what it says on the tin.

To be honest, I don't really use penetrating fluid. Big stuff usually undoes with a bit of oil, small stuff, if badly corroded, usually breaks off. Then gets replaced.
Most of the stuff I work on is pretty old, and the parts have done their time anyway. Destroy and replace is usually the way it goes.

I do use WD40 on occasions as an electrical water displacement spray.

What he says. Plus gas for penetrating, no question and GT85 as a lube / protecting the engine casing and ally parts on my bike. It also smells luvverly :D
