Hello guys

Can I Waxoyl using a brush as i dont have a compressor also is it worth doing it yourself or just take it to a garage to have them do it on a ramp?

This question has been asked many many times before, if you give it a search on here.

General thoughts on here are that Waxoyl isn't as good as Dinitrol. You can get that in aerosol cans, 4941 for the outside of the chassis, and ML for the inside. Make sure you get the extension tube thing as it allows you to do in the bulkhead too and gets right inside the chassis.

I reckon you need 4/5 cans of 4941 and a couple of the ML. It makes a good job, remember to pressure wash first. And to cover up most skin, it's a pain to get off.
 
You can brush it on, but it's very messy and doesn't give good coverage. And it'll take ages.

Aerosol cans don't work great, you'll never get all of the content out and they block up.

Only real way to apply it is with a compressor. It's still messy and will still take hours to do a Land Rover properly, but it's the best way.

As for the pro's and con's. I've had good success with it.

Prices for having it applied to your vehicle will vary wildly.

I waxoyl mine about five years ago and it needs doing again. To do it properly I think you do need a compressor to be able to get into areas the paint brush wont reach. Plus you have to warm the waxyol up so it spreads better. When I bought my waxyol it came with some accessories like a long rod so you could get inside the box sections of the chassis which you would not be able to reach with a brush or aerosol can. When I did mine I parked it up on ramps on grass, I would imagine it would make a bit of a mess on a driveway.
 
Simple answer is yes you can. I use a brush with unthinned / cold waxoyl to get at fiddly bits on the chassis, especially when I want to avoid overspray onto the brakes / discs. As others have noted, you will get superior coverage and better finish with a compressor, I consider one essential for doing the insides of the chassis. In a previous post I reported a near disaster when using a compressor, shutz gun and one litre re-fill can; the extension tube bent shut while I was wiggling it into the chassis and all the pressure went into the can (instead of through the gun / pulling the wax from the can) and the pressure bellied the bottom of the can but didn't quite burst it. Just had a professional pressure can gun delivered, not unpacked it yet, that should be a bit safer for me.
 
If you see what people are asking to waxoyl a car, for the same money you can buy a compressor, air line, wax applicator gun, several tins of wax and still have some money left over.
Next time you do it the only cost is the wax itself as you now have all the kit.
 
I've just taken delivery of some Dinitrol ready to do mine. Been working on cleaning the chassis out as best I can, rigged up some 10mm pipe on the hose pipe and been feeding it down the rails hoping to loosen as much dirt as possible!

Anyone got any tips for cleaning the chassis out? Mines having some welding down Friday then plan to giving it a final steam clean underneath and leaving in the workshop a few days to dry out before under sealing it
 
Dinitrol came from eBay, bought the large kit with spray gun etc as I've got a compressor to run it
 
you need to get waxoil hot and you can use the waxoil spray kit with extension.
heat it for a few hours in a tin of hot water. maybe on a portable gas hob.
have the car prepared completely and you need to work quickly.
you can do complete car in an hour...it will go on like hell.
enjoy....desposable gloves overalls etc a must.

This time of year you may never get the inside of the chassis dry if the vehicle is kept outside.

I took mine to my Landy mechanic and it cost me £250 all in. Steamed off first then scrubbed and lastly oiled. Too messy to do on my own and money well spent. If you're anywhere near Cornwall I can point you to him.
 
Ok thanks guys so i've decided ill spring for a compressor and do it myself saving in the long run...

Any tips on which one to buy? There's so many. 25ltr / 50ltr etc etc

i would like to be able to spray paint with it too if possible ;)

Buy the biggest you can afford, you don't want to be 'running out' of air and waiting for it to pick up pressure halfway through with uneven spray patterns. It will be a balance of something that is 50l+ and pushing out the amount of air-pressure you need consistently (read stat sheet for gun and comp).

On a side note, get a good brand second hand gun of ebay IF you are planning on doing any panel spraying (for waxoil I would get a 20 quid ebay jobbie and bin it afterwards), usually these will be lobbed out by body-shops who replace £300+ quid guns once a year, some bargains to be had!

I agree! Bit late in the year for application, better to wait for warm dry weather, unless you have artificial drying facility.

I very much doubt if it is possible to get a good job at that price. It takes four days to properly prepare and protect a landrover chassis. What did they do on the inside?

You don't really need a compressor. If you thin or heat the waxoyl. or use dinitrol, an old knapsack sprayer or similar is quite adequate. Worked well for me for years.
For spray painting, you want a big tank. at least 300 litres, and those compressors are pretty expensive.

300 litre comps are perfect for bodyshops, but something at 50-100l will be fine for a bit of diy.

Most I know that spray for a living have large compressors. Myself I don't spray paint, always brush or roller, I just have a little portable to blow up tractor tyres etc., blowing up tractor rears is hard work with a foot pump! :D
 
using a compressor to spray it will make your life sooo much easier, not only that, having a compressor will make your life easier full stop, especially as you have got a landy

I did my freelander a few months back, only took a morning to do, but I gave it a could spray wash a few days before.

need to do my disco now, probably this weekend
