water in the boot

I opened the boot today and i noticed that the carpet is damp/ wet. I am pretty sure the rear boot window was closed. Any idea what i should check/do? drainage channels etc.

Check the boot floor cubby box. You'll probably find it's half full of water, which is a common issue, as is water leaking into the boot.

I will check it out thanks. I have search/read on the forum.. Do you think its probably the seals round the back door. ?
I also watched a video where the water was coming in from the under side of the car

If it's a three door, there could be a chance it's coming in from the seal between the hardtop and the body as well. If there are no obvious tears or kinks, I've found that just giving the seals a very good clean, and rubbing some silicone on them has cured it on the couple of occasions I've spotted water getting in. It seems even a small bit of grit is enough to make the seal ineffective.

Failing that, pull back the carpet, sit in the boot, while someone creates some rain with a hose, and see if you can determine where it's coming in from.

Thank you for the advice. I wanted to take the carpet up in boot and check that the water is not getting in from the underside of the car or rear wheel arch. I have seen a few videos on you tube where the seals for the cubby and the vent near the filler cap are letting in water

I thought i would rule this out while i get seals cleaned

I have a 5 door no sunroof

Is it difficult to take the trim off by the wheel arch and the carpet up? Do i need specific tools? Any tips would be great.

2nd question. If the water is getting in like the video above.. is it best to seal it from below and paint the floor with anti rust paint?

I removed a cubby from a Freelander and can confirm there was never any seam sealant around the welds. LR seem to have been relying on the underseal to prevent water ingress but as we all know that didn't work out so well. I wasn't aware of the bad seal around the fuel filler but I'm not surprised.
Removing the rear interior panels is a pain so if you can get access to seal it from below then go for it. You may have to drop the exhaust but that shouldn't be too hard.
