getting colder here in the Borders, and this is just the start of it! :(
I'm appreciating how quickly the 'program' mode on hevac clears the windscreen, but I wonder - is it ok to start up and leave it running to warm up on these frosty mornings? or is there a reason why not? (Its a 2.5 DT, and we're out in the boonies - no chance of any villains jumping in and driving off!) :)
 
How else would you warm it up unless the engine was running? Its up to you if your in it or not. :) personally i'll turn mine on sit with it for a few moments then leave it to do its thing takes about 5mins for seats windows and mirrors to all clear then off we go.
 
Yeah, I could have put it better! I mean to say does it do any harm to start up and then be left on idle to warm up. Obviously it warms up once you're driving ...

If you can't see through the windows you don't have a lot of option but to leave it to warm up. Your average fuel mileage on the computer will dip considerably though.
 
We had an Audi once and the handbook said NOT to start up and leave idling... that's why I'm asking the question! I'm on about leaving it running for 10 mins while I have my last cup of coffee. Does the oil, coolant etc all circulate enough. Why would the Audi book say that?
 
There's something in the handbook along the lines of "in the interests of fuel economy drive as soon as starting but don't use excessive throttle" but nothing about it causing a problem mechanically.

Ok then start it up and rev it's balls off for five minutes. That was a joke don't do that. :D:D:D

Pretty much the same with any car....idling is not ideal, but you will have little choice!

It has been said an engine at idle may not burn all the fuel injected and this can damage cats and the like....it is also less efficient!

Not ideal if the oil lamp is flickering. :D:D:D
 
Ok thanks for all that! I noticed this morning that the idle speed was higher than usual (this is something the ECU does, temp related?) so probably not any over injection going on there ? And it'll burn off anyway once you're driving, no?
I think the whole question of comfort over fuel economy was decided when I got it!

True....She is behaving at the moment, only flickers maybe twice on the journey to work or home....I have put STP Oil Treatment in and even though I have fiddled with the bypass screw...it made little if any difference to the idle speed, in fact I wound it all the way in and then almost all the way out and not a fecking dicky bird of a change in idle speed!

Next is to pull the IACV and give it a clean with carb cleaner!

Camshaft wear is at it's highest at idle - best to fast idle or drive as soon as you can - or get a coolant or block warmer!
 
The unburnt fuel also washes the oil off the liners so wear is also higher but this is mainly petrol engine as the diesel fuek is a bit oiler
 
start engine wedge window scrapper between peddle and under dash panel to give it fast idle for quicker warm up simples:D
 
I always warm up my cars before driving off, I think it's safer than driving in a cold misting up car, never caused me a problem.
Do my aircon fans mod, remove the viscous and it will warm up noticeably faster.
 
Landcruisers get a switch that says "power heat" what this does is ups the revs to a fast idle and engages an auxilary water pump to pump colant through the heater so you get a bit of warm air a bit sooner
