Want to do an expedition, no idea where!

Hey guys! I'm jumping in to this thread too!
I have a TD5 110, and I am also looking for a destination and perhaps other cars for a trip...
Either north (Norway/Sweden, etc) or Morocco would do for me... I think Morocco would be more exciting, and more expensive too!

I'd be happy to join a car if looking for backup! :)

My free time? Anywhere between May and Aug, or December!
P.S. I am based in South London

Hi Jon, well the plan is to get some ideas from the show - Im going up Saturday due to other commitments, Norway/Sweden sounds different.. pack the thermals for that one maybe! If I end up planning something I'll stick up a post here and see if anyone wants to tag along.

lol same here... I'm taking my little city shoe.. enter the Toyota Aygo! Parks anywhere and 62mpg!! :D

That's a bold claim! Can it park here? :D:D

What you guys think of the show?
I was there Friday night...
I did not think it was THAT amazing...

Jon

I went on Sunday, it was alright but I felt there were more people trying to you holidays than anything else... I enjoyed a couple of talks though. Shame there wasn't really anything about landies either!

Ditto. If I hadn't flown in from Belgium I doubt I would have come on Sunday. Some of the talks were good, but the floor show was fairly poor I thought... only a few people I wanted to talk to and mostly people trying to sell you packages.

I did meet the guys from Atlas Overland there, who I had done a weekend with earlier, so that was cool... talked about a few overland things although they're not landy guys. Also bumped into John who I met at LRO Peterborough and who's organizing a series 2 expedition to Morocco.

Agreed, it was ok.. got some good info from the chap with the land cruiser, a couple of the talks were very interesting too. All in all I agree with landroverjack, there seemed to be a lot of stalls trying to sell a 'package' to eco freaks... Good day out tho! :)

Did anyone sign up to the base jumping off Everest for a tiny sum of £25,000? lol

Or the Calais to Beijing motorbike ride for £16k not including your bike :eek: Did have a good chat to one guy on the self drive safari stand. And my dad spent half an hour looking round and asking questions about the big disaster aid tent.. Probably liked the chick showing him round :lol:

Ok it's decided! Series 3, Morrocco, May 2011 :)

Plan to take between 2-3 weeks and all we know right now is we want to go via, Paris, some French/Spanish coastal roads, Madrid, Gibraltar, Morrocco and on the way home the Nurburgring.

The vehicle will be a 1980 Series 3 with a 200tdi. We're both mechanics so prep and keeping the vehicle going shouldn't be a big worry.

Having had a think and taking in your advise Alex/Adam (which are you? :p) we're no longer worried about travelling solo.

Rusty Rhinos I noticed you didn't book the ferry in advance for the Spain/Morrocco crossing. Is it any more expensive or difficult to get on by doing this? Not being to sure on how long it will take us to get from point to point I'd rather not book any ferrys really and just turn up and take the next available ship. If it means waiting a couple of hours or even over night then no big deal. Whats your experience with this?

There are hundreds of ticket sellers for the ferries, on most of the main routs into Algeciras.
I have found through my experience, and others, that it is normally cheaper to get the tickets right at teh Algeciras ferry port.
There are about 6 glass windows of ticket sellers for the various ferry companies..

Just walk them all, ask when the next ferry is, and how much.
There is probably a ferry running every hour or so,

I am sure the price for a 4x4 and a person is around £45 each way.

This was Sept 2010

Just got back from spending about 8 months around Europe in a Range Rover and had some great experiences where the roads were a tad ordinary in Montenegro Macedonia Greece Turkey Kosovo Albania and i think it would make a great Expedition .I did about 25000 miles and camped out most of the time even though the temperature got down to -26 at one stage also had some experiences with uncleared snow on some of the tracks.
The conclusion to me seem that it is one of the most desirable destinations if you want some off roading and a lot of scenery and history as it seem to be the cradle of civilisation.
I am now back in Australia where i use a 1976 series !!! SWB for desert tracks and I have done the Birdsville Track ( which was notorious at one time but now you could take your honda jazz down now) The french line is where the sand dunes start 1200 of them and its 400 Kms between fuel and dont forget your running in low ratio most of the timeThe Canning stock route is 1900 between fuel stops although you can get 200 lts dumped about half way.
Other track are the gunbarrel highway and you can also follow the train lines across the Nullabour plain
Last trip was in the outback of NSW down to Kangaroo Island.
