Hi guys,

I mentioned this in someone else's fred, but as this is likely to be a fair old challange I though it'd be better to start me own. Lately, myself and DD have been jawing about things we can make for our Freelanders. With my industrial design background, and his mechanical background, we should be able to come up with some neat stuff. The purpose of this thread will be to present our ideas to you guys. Partially for technical input, partically for design feedback and partially for market research.

I am wary of showing early WIP's and such, but in this case I think it's ok and this will be an entusiast driven project.

We've been talking about developing the following gear:

- Bonnet light pod (that actually fits)
- Roof light pod
- Snorkel
- Bolt on ali sump guard
- Eggsauce guard

We already have ideas and designs for some of those. Some are really easy to get into production, some will take some time and alot of coffee.

This isn't something we'll be going to the banksters to get a loan to do, we'll be doing it in our spare time when funds and time allow. But if we do put something out for sale it'll be quality kit, and we want to make it all affordable enough to stick onto our (practically wurfless) Freelanders.

The first few items we are designing are the Bonnet and Roof pods, and the sump guard. The guard will simply be a CNC cut sheet of 8mm ali that can either be bolted or welded to your exhisting guard frame. Nice and simple and durable enough for all but the most extreme rock crawling.

I am currently working on both light pods. They are still in the styling phase but I'm getting a more firm idea of how to develop them as a kit every day. The plan is for them to be made from vacuum formed ABS plastic (1.5 - 2mm) with sockets for LED headlight bulbs and clear lenses. I'm trying to design these with the styling of the FL1 in mind, but also so that they won't add much drag so they should have minimal impact on fuel consumption. LED bulbs are now cheap enough to be viable alterbatives to traditional lamps. This means we can use thermoplastics instead of GRP as the LED's produce negligable heat and won't melt plastic.

Here are some images I've been working on, but these are very early WIP's. I'm going to get a 1/4 scale mock up milled out in blue foam to see what it looks like physically, and if I'm happy then I'll move forward with the engineering of the kit.

Will.

I'd be up for a one piece guard to replace my huge, and practically useless sump guard.

two small access flaps in it to get to the sump plug and oil filter would be a nice addition too :)

Get cracking! I'll def be interested In the sump guard and a snorkle! and what about rock sliders?

There are already very good ones out there and I doubt we could do much better for a lower price. Welding is another labour intensive process. The good thing about kits and self assembly stuff is that it lowers the price, so that's what ew're after. But who knows, maybe if things take off :).

Yup,

I'd be interested in a one-piece bolt-on sumpguard to replace the plastic tray.

Drain-plug access is not essential. I prefer to drop the tray once a year / every 20K anyway.

Singvogel.

Sounds like the one piece thing is the preferred option. Well if the pods go well then that's definitely something to explore. Our initial idea was just to make a sheet of alu that replaces the plastic section of the guard while retaining the original frame and base plate.

two versions, one with access one without for the superheroes:rolleyes:;)

a one piece will increase ground clearance by a couple of inches :)

also a decent diff eggsauce guard would be great.

My preference for no access flap is based on years of rallying going back to the mid-70s.

I subscribe to the 'Keep It Simple' school of thought.

Screws retaining the inspection hatch got scored /damaged and became a pain in the butt.

Later Escort Mexico and BMW 5 series ones had an open access port which was fine on asphalt, but acted like an earth-scoop on whites and tracks.

I have an old guard off my 528i (I don't go rallying with it any more) which is a very simple one-piece alu plate with just a single 30degree bend at the front. It even has little rubbber barrel Aeon type mounts. I've been toying with the idea of modifying it to fit the FL but don't have access to the tools needed these days.

I'll see if I can post a pic of it.

i was messing with you, your explanation makes absolute sense and tried/tested in the field too :)

i'm just a lazy sod, but now i think i'd rather have it totally one peice SV ;)

You could always get a keyhole saw and /or an 'Abrafile' and make as many access holes as you like. :p

I'm pretty lazy too these days, by the way and like short cuts well enough - as long as they don't create more problems later

Messing and banter no problem.

Messing and banter no problem.

As always :)

not sure if any holes in it would be acceptable now you've mentioned the scoop effect

i'll just unbolt the lot, it will save hassle in the long run.

if the bolts are positioned on the sides, rather than underneath where they can be bashed, they won't incur damage.

My plans for the sump guard was always gonna be no holes just a SV says it fills it with muck, I've been scratching my head for ages trying to find a way to make it strong but affordable! I think it's sussed and between the two of us it will hopefully become a reality. Then I can test it to destruction:D

Stylish yet functional;)

DD

That's goal! I'm not interested in a bit of drainpipe, that looks good on a fender but thats because the fender is pretty much made out of sheet metal and bailer twine (which is what makes it so legendary :)!)

I want something that is specifically styled to fit the car in question. Aesthetics can be as important as functionality.

Cos we is stylish!

I want to know how much work peops are willing to do themselves to keep costs down! ie assembly, fitting, wiring, drilling holes, to name a few?
