Could anyone recommend a good budget winch looking at spending about £350 for a series 3 88" do i need a mounting bracket as well

Champion are reasonable for the price, and yes you'll need to make a winch mounting or buy a winch bumper.

Get yourself a Trifor, no mounting needed - just a bit of muscle power and it will still work when your battery goes flat, and it wont cost what you could buy a whole series 3 for.

trouble with big-uns is that they're ferkin heavy to handle.
i got a 3.2 tonner and wish i'd got a 1.6 tonner instead.

my mate got exactly the same deal of be-gay! how strange.
i picked up an Warn M8000 of ebay for £150 the other week. brand new goodwinch bowmotor on it and brand new albrigt solonoid pack
hadnt been used since fitting the motor.Bar gain.

Isn't the rating the safe weight limit (SWL) for actual lifting and the pulling limit is twice the swl. so a 1.6tonne will pull 3.2tonnes and the 3.2 will pull 6.4tonnes.
As much as this pains me to say - yes you are right.

tre is just too tall and skinny to lift the 3.2 tonner not to mention getting on

Mines a PTO winch and I haven't got a clue what that means or how to use it. All I know is that its heavy and rattles.

It has a drive shaft that mates up with a Power Take Off unit (PTO) that fastens to the transfer box to operate it you put the low/High range gear selctor into neutral then you start the engine and put the car into 1st gear the vehicle wont move but the winch will to engage the winch the lever on the winch operates a dog clutch push it in and the teeth line up with the ones on the drum. doesn't drain the battery but the engine has to be running for it to work If you don't want it winch Pto and bumper is probably worth about £350

Don't forget that Tirfor wire is special (has to resist crushing by the mechanism). Normal wire rope will not do and may fail with disasterous consequenses.

Yes it has a coloured strand woven into the cable usually orange.
