Hi guys/gals,

looking for some help please, recently acquired a 2000 Discovery TD5 auto which had a few issues, straight through exhaust off and new silencer fitted-can hear the radio now, fitted new water pipes-leak sorted, fitted new pipes to intercooler sorted-amazing difference, steering box was leaking so fitted a recon but the car still has a bit of play on the steering wheel and wanders a bit, also the steering is a bit on the stiff side, tyres are at 35 on the front and 40 on the back, did notice when I was bleeding the coolant system that the fluid in the PAS reservoir looked like it was boiling/bubbling, is this normal

Have you owned a land rover before? not taking the **** just a live axle vehicle is always going to have slightly floaty steering compared to any modern independent suspension car
Mot spec steering freeplay for a truck is 3 inches of free play at the steering wheel, so pro rata this down to land rover size and thats still got to be 2 inches?

Most likely just the return flow of pas fluid, has you car also got ace? if so be careful looks like one reservoir but is in fact two.

Be worth checking all suspension and steering bushes for wear but as @lynall says they ain't very refined by modern eurobox standards.

Saying that you say the steering is stiff, mine is nice and light to be fair, has it got standard tyres on it?
I've got 2 inches of play at steering wheel even after replacing track rod ends and drag link

....tyres are at 35 on the front and 40 on the back....
not good at all, beside the fact that they are too big they should at least be similar dimension or the transfer box will suffer also the ABS system is completely mixed up to not speak about the stress on the engine and gearbox... IMO all the steering and stability thing is due to those huge and uneven tyres

it might be sucking air in at the pump, a new pump would be the answer if so,its worth checking steering knuckle ball joints too, tyres need to be equal all round else it will steer and drive badly apart from center diff wear

Check the age/wear of the tyres.
I replaced the old, worn AT tyres on the front of my 2000 D2 with new tyres today and it made a significant difference in how it drives on the road.

Yes, I’ve had a disco 1 300tdi for 9 years but it finally gave in to the rust gremlins, never had any steering issues with that one, this is the first D2 td5 I’ve had, after getting the recon steering box fitted it had about 5-6 inches on the steering wheel but after getting the box adjusted it’s now around 2-3 inches.

The ace has been removed and it’s now on springs, not sure if it’s been raised or not, someone said putting on higher springs can make them wander ??

it's got grabber AT's all round, maybe a bit more than half worn

Easy enough to check if its been lifted, just measure from centre of hub cap to wheel arch and post it up and Im sure someone will check theirs for you to compare.
