Do some of you know if it is possible to adjust the mileage recorder in a
brand-new VW Touareg? If so can you guide me in direction of how?

Sure, put really big tires on it, think REALLY BIG, that way for every 1
rotation of the tire, you will travel futher, but the odometer will
think you have the regular size tires. This is why the Big Foot truck
that was in the movie Take This Job And Shove It only had 3 miles on it
when it was sold after the filming... it really had 203 miles on it, but
those big tires tricked the odometer. :p

Odometer perhaps? pull the fuse for it, I know you can do it on honda's,
very illegal and unethical though

Doesn't really get you anywhere, as the ECM continues to record vehicle
mileage...so all it takes is a questioning mechanic to scan the ECM to get
the true mileage.

Been playing with the Dealership's Test Vehicle to much, and now the boss is
back, you need to alter the mileage... ?? Was she worth it is the big
question ;-) ??

Thanks a lot for all your colourful answers. The thing is that you are
suggesting solutions to "rewind" the mileage recorder. What I need it a
"fast forward"! Can you help?

No, sorry.

Is this so you can buy a new one that qualifies as a demonstrator ;-)

what u could do is damage the dash ie glass etc on it then it a new bit
fitted. they will need to re-entre the milage so what u could do is ask the
person who is doing it to well change it?

i would not do this as i do not think it is right( had to say it)

If you have access to electronic test equipment, you could connect a
function generator in place of the vehicle speed sensor. The VSS gives
out on the order of 1000 pulses / km (størrelsesorden, kjenner ikke det
eksakte tall), so set it to something like a 10 Hz square wave going
from 0V to 5V as a starting point. Watch the odometer carefully, this is
not a reversible process. (Yes, the odomter counts up even when you are
going in reverse).

Erm, drive it?

I can understand why you wouldn't want to try this obvious solution, but if
you get the windows tinted dark enough, nobody will be able to see that it's
you...

Any of those people who 'adjust mileage' with their laptop should be able to
do it. I heard of someonw who wanted his speedo 'adjusted' down, refused to
pay the fee after the work was done and then found after the guy had left
he'd had 100K miles added.

True poetic justice.

All new electronic dashboards can be moved forward once, via the 1552 or a Vagcom.
This is so the dash can be set to the previous mileage if it needs to be replaced.
Theoretically if you move it far enough forward it will reset.

From Ross-tech.com:

Set correct odometer reading. Do this LAST, and only after you have successfully performed all of
the above, because once done, it is irreversible. This can only be done once, and only if the
cluster is "new" (has less than 100 km showing on it):

[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
[Adaptation - 10]
Enter "channel number" 09 to select channel
Put in the number of km divided by 10. Example: If old cluster had 50,357 km, put in 5036.
Note: Some clusters may require a Login of 13861 before you can set the mileage.
[Save]

I think I recall hearing that the P38 Range-Rovers had the mileage stored in
several of the computers - if you swapped one of the ECUs out, and the
mileages varied between them, they'd "negotiate", and use the highest of the
stored mileages - which would then be stored in all. Seems a sensible way,
until you start swapping "known-good" components between cars to trouble-
shoot the easy way.

Hi Randolph.

Thanks for your input! Sounds like a valid solution. Do you know if the
sensor reading the speed of the car is inductive or capacitive? My guess is
that the sensor is reading the rpm on the crankshaft on the engine, right?

The crankshaft keeps cranking round when the cars in idle, so that wouldn't
be a very good place to put the speed sensor for car speed. Engine tach yes,
forward/reverse motion no. I'd expect it to be on the output from the
tranny, or along the driveshaft. if it's a pulse generator, a magnet on or
in the driveshart and some windings suspended close to the driveshaft would
create a pulse like a generator does.

I'm no expert however.
