viscous fan

Just replaced mine, as the original had some play in it. Taking it off should in theory free up a bit more power and fuel economy, but it's not that simple. The fan may well add power/economy at low speeds and higher revs (when towing) as it pulls cold air through the radiator and more importantly the intercooler.

At higher speeds the fan isnt needed, but then its spinning in moving air so providing very little drag anyway.

Some people take them off but put them back for towing. I think the benefit of taking it off would be marginal if anything, so I am leaving mine on.

Production engineers put them on so the vehicle can cope with most conditions, they dont add such things for fun!

hi guys, a quick question or two.....do i need my viscous fan fitted on and what are the advantages, if any, not having it?

Lots of peeps myself included have run DI's TDi 300's without fans very successfully, but I tried it once on a TD5 and it didn't achieve a stable temp.

So I wouldn't be recommending running a TD5 without a fan.

yes m50dpp, the engineers could be right.

just changed the steering pump and havnt refitted the fan yet. i think i was alway going to, just wanted to know.

i suppose i could have gone without it as no such thing as a traffic jam here so always moving.

better fuel economy not an issue as DEISEL is half your price here lol

will nail it back on in the morning, cheers

yes biglad, i was pretty sure that i had read on here about running without them, done a bit of a search and didnt find much.
i wasnt sure of reasons for going without one but that has cleared a few things up, cheers
