i need to order some bits for my landy but needed the vin number to do so,my local dealer tells me the number makes no sense.i don't have a vin plate inside so used the one on the spring hanger.this is how it's stamped on the hanger-

Y1452
S1

its a very early series 3 109 but the dealer says he needs more info and the haynes book of lies isn't helping much!
can anyone help?
 
What dealer? I foolishly went to my local land rover dealer for something when i first had my series and they were a waste of time! Was a similar thing with the number i think.
 
mates got the same hassle with his 200TDI discovery ,he quoted his chassis number and it appears he is driving round in a lhd ex-army 24v 110

If you havent got a vin plate to take the number off of it will be on your V5 documents. If you go to some where like paddocks just tell em the wheel base, year and engine and they will usually know what bits you need. Failing that you can take the offending part off and take it to the counter of a parts supplier explain what its off and if they have one in compare it to the oily broken bit you have bought in. I think you will find that for MOT reasons you will need a vin plate of some description on your landy. Bit of thin ali with the numbers stamped on it pop rivited to the slam panel or bulkhead will do it but you can now by reproduction vin plated on ebay which are around £5 delivered (Thin ali with all the Max vehicle weight, towing weight and a gap for the vin number to make it look puka on a restored landy) I got mine of ebay and if you ask nice they will print your vin number on the plate at the time of production to save you having to stamp it on your self.
 
haven't got the v5 yet but it won't help because it will/should have the same number as the one on the spring hanger,it is a very early series 3 and has some 2a bits on it so i need to be sure when ordering stuff.
 
A S3 doesn't have a VIN number uit has a chassis number (a VIN requires a 17 digit number) stealers are **** for classic parts and most trade places are too because most (common) aftermarket parts mfrs have stopped making the bits if the part numbers carry over to the early 110s and 90s they will list them
 
What bits do you need, cause if it's been converted to V8 the odd bits have quite likely been changed already.
What IIA bits are on an early Ser III anyway? I thought it was more a case of late IIA's having III bits.
 
it just has a few 2a bits which aren't of any consequence such as door hinges and the odd bracket here and there,i've pretty much got all i need now but am considering converting the brakes to servo type whilst i have the wings off and bulkhead exposed.
 
either way tha last place yer wanna go fer yer bits is a stealer. you can bet the cost will be atleast three times what yer'd pay at paddocks or craddocks. also there is a good chance thats where yer stealer will get them from
 
i've definitely got myself some work to do,the bulkhead is fubar but luckily i enjoy fabrication and welding.my main worry is the interior and wiring,they are both knackered but i've got nothing else to do so i'll carry on.
 
my mig is a bit crappy because it's a gasless one,if you want a really nice looking bead of weld then i can't do it with my mig.if you just want something welded and aren't worried about the looks then no problem at all.
