Hi All, I have started to feel a vibration when accelerating, mostly on pull away from standstill. It feels like something on the transmission. any ideas where to look. Cheers. 1999 P38 2.5d auto

^+1 Bad things happen when they fail! If they are ok give them a few shots of grease if they havent been done for a while. oh and check gear box mounts for wear these will cause vibration if they are on the way out.

Almost certainly the UJ's : as mentioned don't leave it too long. I left it longer that I should and it sheared ! Also when I had it done I had them tightened down again after a couple of weeks. First fitting seems to need bedding in .

my father in laws(now mine) had a vibration on acceleration. Like an exhaust rubbing on the body. 7 miles later i baught it with a naffed flex plate and bellhousing.

If the front prop fails it will re arrange the underside of your rangie. Grease nipples takes 2mins to lay under and do. if youve had an oil or fuel leak and it drips on uj will thin grease out n cause hassle. Usually full lock you can hear them tick or click if theyre loose

i hope thats not what causing my vibration sounds similar

Had a slight grind sort of sound to it. it started 1 morning. 12miles to horses then 12 back then later on that evening off to take me to get fags and he went to build up speed from 30 to 60 and she hit 2300rpm went pure quiet and smooth again then bang and youve seen the pics. Felt like a manual car exhaust hitting the body under engine breaking. Okay the car had had a hard time before box constantly leaking near 2ltrs over 250miles. (Been run out of fluid and overheated more times then i could remember) Lot of heavy acceleration no maintenance except the minimal to keep it moving. No wonder she went out with a bang.

A 9hr job on the floor eas would make it harder then how i did it sat on 4 wheels on the ground lol. Also sure both manifolds and more has to come off on the v8 dave. A day and a half should see you through. For 150 or so quid for plate and spacer its better then the disaster. Not a bad job to do

well lets just hope mines the front diff its comming out soon for a refurb iv got the rear sitting here im running a second hand one in the back at the moment but iv a whine on the over run. iv got no banging just this slight vibration felt threw the drivers floor. when i did diff oil change it look like original oil came out grey n thick

Noise on overrun is pinion bearings.

yes but is it my second hand rear diff or my front diff ? will hopefully know soon enuf going to have the front refurbed but before that im going to jack the front wheels up dissconnectthe prop and give everything a good turn when i did this to my rear i could hear the nackerd rear diff

You may not hear anything if it is an early pinion bearing fail. Check for up and down play in the pinion. Noise comes when ring gear is driving pinion loading bearings opposite to normal load.

yep checked when i did my ujs thats what led me to pull the rear diff there was so much play it wasnt funny i will assume(mother of all feck ups) never assume that the s/h rear diff is ok and that the problem is either front diff top of the list or front prop out of balance not likley, cv joint possible or n/s wheel bearing on its way who knows lol

and i thinought i had it just about sorted

Had similar problem on mine a weird vibration on acceleration as an ex Land Rover RR sales I would have bet money on uj's ! BUT no when it eventually let go a week later it turned out to be the flex plate :-( which was unavailable both here and in Europe with 56 RR waiting for the same, so I managed to source one in Canada and got it Fed Exd back ! not a cheap exercise

You have saved me again lads, it was the front u,js. Nice smooth drive again, Many Thanks.

the only thing that was awkward was I had to fit longer grease nipples, as I could not get

the grease gun on the others supplied. Cheers Radar.

Did you not think of greasing the joints before you fitted the prop shaft. You may find that at large angles of articulation the long nipples get sheared off. With the prop in the correct position a standard grease gun should do the job.
