vibrating on acceleration in 3rd and 2nd gear

my disco started vibrating through the steering wheel yesterday quite bad and worse under load i.e going up a hill ect the vibrating starts in second gear and finishes in 3rd it only does it under load and if im coasting in gear it does not vibrate i have checked the uj's and rear donut all look good the propshaft balance weights are still there all of my wheel bearings have play and been a bit sh+t for a couple of weeks but i have the parts coming would they cause the vibration coming through steering wheel??? also engine been running a bit funny on idle for a few days :confused:
 
Sounds like the whole thing needs a decent service is all .. especially wheel bearings! When mine started vibrating the first time the UJ on the front prop transfer box end dropped off on M62 ... Second time a rear wheel bearing collapsed on M1, welding the remains to the stub axle! Both time towing the caravan uphill!!

I'd suggest you don't drive till you've at least taken bits off to check .. the UJ's often don't move 'cos they're still under drive-train tension, the wheel bearings can sometimes also not move much when wheel is wobbled 'cos one bearing on a side is good (what happened to mine) ...
 
thanks for the reply mate i might fit the wheel bearings and see whats the score if not bearigs what you think it might be ? uj are reasonable cheap right i say some on ebay for around £15
 
i ordered the wheel bearings from mailorder4x4.com came to £61 for 4x kits also the vibrating stopped for about 7miles today then started again but worse
 
Got wheel bearings fitted and its still vibrating badly noticed th oil in the rear diff was light brown and front was black rear diff has little or no oil
 
As I said earlier, time for a full service ... ;)

Where, roughly, are you? Diffs are easy to change oil, gearboxes marginally more awkward .. in all cases crack open the filler plug first, to make sure you can open it! Before actually draining any oils!!! ;)
 
haha lol do you know im a mechanic by trade atleast nvq level 3 but i would have emptied the diff first without thinking of that great bit of advice lol thanks mate ive got the uj's here and hopefull fit them tomorrow i have a sneakey suspision its the transfer shaft thats buggered

If you are going to go to the trouble of replacing the U/j's yourself, don't buy cheapies. They are awkward to fit, and don't last long.

Buy GKN or similar, they are a bit more expensive but not a lot and once you've replaced them with good'uns she'll be right for years.
 
all sorted now the uj on front prop was fooked it took alot to get it apart but new one is in unfortunaltey i did put a cheap one in but im sure it will be replaced before long
