Series 3 Very stiff clutch problem

Sorry if this sounds like an idiotic question, but how hard clutch pedal should be on a series 3 (88 petrol)?
I have not had the opportunity to drive a properly maintained landy, so I have no point of reference.
Also what should be done to make it softer? Mine is causing constant knee pain.
If anybody has a link to some diagrams or explanation as how the clutch system work that is greatly appreciated.

It shouldn't be stiff, firm but heavier than a car. When is the biting point? Sounds like either the master or slave cylinders has seized. I have the workshop diagrams but that'll have to wait until tomorrow. It could also be a problem somewhere in the system . It may be the master cylinder. Overhaul kits not expensive.
 
Lubricate the clutch pedal shaft it has a bolt in the end remove and squirt some oil into it ,I have fitted a grease nipple to mine.
 
As above, it's going to be firmer than a car but it shouldn't be a problem unless you're in stop start traffic a lot.
Have you usually got a dodgy knee?

If the cylinders are not stiff and the pedal moves freely, then that's as good as the clutch gets. You could sleeve the master or get smaller one but then it's trial and error to ensure there is enough travel at the slave.
 
Does the pedal come up as fast as it goes down? If it's stiff both ways it could well be the pedal pivot. The clutch is heavy on the series but I'm not sure I'd use the word "stiff" to describe it. If you crack the slave cylinder bleed nipple there should be virtually no resistance in the pedal.
 
SpringDon I do have a dodgy knee but I had very old trucks and jeeps before and this one is much more difficult to manage than the worst CJ7s I had. I don't think it is normal. Oxides it comes up relatively quickly, so it can't be the pivot, but thanks for pointing that out.
Blackburn after finding a diagram I will try your suggestion, at the moment I have no idea what it means (fitting a nipple).
Thanks JohnS for your reply. Cylinders are not expensive. I will try working on that direction.
Problem is the former owner was a strong deliver in not spending money. I have no idea which parts of this truck is original and which parts are fitted in (as they call them here). I have found pieces as far as peogeut and hilman on this truck (one by one they were expelled and the landy is returned to honorable original state :)
 
I had the same problem- in the end I changed it and it was a lot better. I think it was the "fingers"? on the case/ cover that had got stiff?
