Hello!

I've Got a problem with my defender. Its a P-reg 300tdi and the problem is that every morning , or when its been sitting for a while, when i start it,it chucks out huge amounts of white smoke until i get about a mile or two down the road. It also does this when you're going down hill without any acceleration but nothing like as badly as when first started in the mornings. I've tried changing the fuel filter in hope that it might help, but it didn't. So if any can help it would be much appreciated!

I would say it's smoke, how can i tell if it's steam or smoke? It smells and acts like smoke rather than steam i think, But couldn't be sure. Thanks

not sure how best to describe it..its just one of them things you either know or you don't know .. smoke tends to be more opaque than steam. try this take yer rad cap off and start the engine, have a look in the resorvoir and see if there are any gray bubbles coming up.

Unburnt diesel will give a white smoke, I take it is is running ok, and not missing on any cylinders.

Is it running on standard pump diesel?

I get it in my 90 when its starting from cold for the first few minutes, and its just the diesel is not yet burning properly.

Hello, Yeah its using standard pump diesel and it seems to be running ok. just to give you an idea of how much smoke, when i drive down my track in the mornings i can't actually see out of my rear window. It's strange because it only seems to do it at certain revs, if i rev very high it doesn't smoke, but if i keep it at around 2000rpm it smokes loads. someone said it could possibly be an injector fault, is this possible?

If there's as much smoke as you say - try getting out and smelling the stuff - if it smells like a red arrows fly by, then it's unburnt diesel - if it smells like a cross between alcohol and last weeks laundry basket then it's coolant.

Cheers,

Adam.
