What do you mean when you say 'don't forget the handbrake cable' - what should I check with it?

I have noticed the handbrake feels like there is less tension in it, but I could be imagining it.

I had suspected Earth problem on chassis leg so took it off cleaned it with fine wire brush, put it back and sprayed coat over it (blue)
No problem now

Your pic in your post 19 looks like you have found the main earth on the transfer box. The other end of that lead should be on a terminal on the adjacent chassis (as per the diagram in my post 11, C01661). There should also be another ring terminal on the same chassis terminal, which then goes directly to the negative battery terminal. Check the battery terminal is secure. Then clean all the earth connections. Before disconnecting the battery, check your handbook for any disconnection procedure to avoid setting the alarm off. (usually involves ignition on to position 2 (ie all dash lights on but not to starter position), then off and disconnect the earth lead within 15 seconds. It may also require re-synchronising the key fob, again check your handbook. Incidentally, does the battery negative terminal get hot?

Your hand brake cable has most likely been serving as the main earth return - clearly, it is NOT designed for this, and will have been softened by the heat - at which point is no longer a hand brake cable - it WILL fail, and this failure will likely be rather unpleasant ..... I.E. no hand brake = LR runs away down hill with consequences .....

In terms of checking it - by the time you have taken it off to do so, you would be better just replacing it with a new, quality item - then you KNOW it is ok .....
