HI HAS ANY ONE GOT A CLUE WHY MY 2001 DSE TAKES A LONG TIME TO START WHEN LOW ON DISEL HOT OR COLD. ITS KILLING THE STARTER MOTOR ANYTHING LESS THEN £30 WORTH OF DISEL INN IT AND ITS A PIG TO START THE PUMP AND TANK HAVE BEEN CHANGED STILL THE SAME YOU CAN SEE AIR IN THE LINE BUT DONT KNOW HOW ITS GETTING INN. MY FRIENDS IS THE SAME???? I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE SOMETHING TO DO WITH SOMETHING CALLED A SAIDOMETER FOUND SOMEWHERE BY THE FULL TANK. IS THERE SUCH A THING??? IF SO WOT IS IT...THANKS FOR ANY HELP....:confused:JAMIE

it sounds like the in tank fuel pump has got a crack in it.the only thing you can do is either change the pump,or keep it topped up with over half a tank of fuel at all times.best bet is to change the pump.;)

THE PUMP AND TANK HAVE BEEN CHANGED -YOU CAN SEE AIR IN THE LINE JAMIE

You've done the obvious thing, the in-tank pump, but you shouldn't have air bubbles in the line. There must be a crack, a leak somewhere to let this air in. No, there isn't a 'sad-o-meter', somebody is winding you up.

Even though you've changed the pump have you checked that it's working? A faulty relay or corroded wiring might mean that the pump is doing nothing.

Other factors can be the leak-off pipes between the injectors, two or more faulty heater plugs or a badly worn injector pump.

As dogsbody says, in tank pump not working or leak off pipes. Also check the under bonnet fuse box for signs and smells of burning. If it's the same hot or cold, it will not be glow plugs as they are not needed for hot start.

Oh and turn of the caps lock on your computer, caps = shouting.

Take the fuel filter off, put a bowl under it and get some one to turn the ignition on, you should get a substantial burst of fuel. Second hand fuel pumps are a false economy.

the tank and pump look to be fine is there a way to check the relays working other then putting your hand on it' with someone turning the key. or should i just get a new one as i think mine must be doing something i dont think it would start with out doing something?? iv had it a few months now so new heater plugs could only help but when the tanks is more then half full the car starts befor you can let go of the key hot or cold...about the meter thing.. just another plonker talking lots about things he knows nothing about..i will have a look at pipes between the injectors and have the pump looked at thanks for your time and help.. jamie:rolleyes:

sorry about the SHOUTING:blabla: lol and thanks for letting me know..a leak on a pipe sounds about right and im going to find the over flow pipe and filter for the tank give them a clean..if i did find a bad smell from the fuse box then would it be the relay??? thanks jamie

clear plastic pipe fuel filter to FIP?mine was letting in air when parked.cheap enough to replace.
hi was the pipe showing sings of the leak or did you change that by chance and it was sorted.. iv had a look for any disel leaking on that pipe as it so easy to see but nothing. but it might be sucking inn air when cars turned off some how.thanks jamie

Did you clean and check the pump before you fitted it? Please don't tell me that you bought a second hand tank with an old pump in it and just stuck it straight in!!!

You can check the relay and pump in one by doing as Datatek says and see what comes out when you turn the ignition. Obviously if the relay is knackered then the pump won't run so you won't get any fuel.

If you can see or smell anything like burning in the under bonnet fuse box or in any of the relay sockets in it then change it. Bad starting could soon become the very least of your problems. Please don't buy a second hand one, there are some serious Rangie owners who reckon that these should be changed after about eight years regardless of how it appears, make sure you buy a diesel one.

Anyway, it's nice to talk to a fellow diesel driver in amongst all these V8s.

I think you guy was talking about a sedimenter or water trap that was fitted to the classics and discos between the tank and fuel filter,p38 doesnt have one.
thank you very much for that:) i must say it seemed abit funny as i could not find any info about it..i dont think the guy was trying to mess me about he,s my brothers friend and they are very much in to there land rovers he must not know there not on the p38 but he will very soon lol thanks agen....jamie

just a thought, when you take the fuel filter off to test the pump, have a look that you only have one sealing washer fitted.a friend of mine had his disco serviced by a main stealer and they left the old seal on as well as fitting the new one.it was a bast#rd to start
