Will the 5% petrol stay mixed with the veg oil?

Reason I ask is when i filled my TD4 with petrol and it conked out, 3 hours later it started and ran fine, i presumed this was because the petrol had seperated again, as a short while later it ran rough again until i filled right up with diesel.

Also will it stay mixed with Bio in the winter months? Best I mix some up in jars and see what happens.

Watch for my results :D

ive been told to avoid putting petrol in a diesel engine to thin fuel. if i was to put some petrol in how much? say for example i put 25litres of diesel in and 20litres of veg oil in??

I use 5% petrol to thin it out in warm weather and run it on only this mix, no derv at all and 10% petrol in winter and use some derv, I don't really measure the amount of derv just if it's really cold I put some in and if it's not I don't.

So to answer your Q, for 20l of oil = 2l unleaded at this time of year

If you want to run a higher % of veg in the winter months try adding 10 to 15% unleaded as its a much better thinner then diesel. Also if you can get sunflower oil it has a lower cloud point so is also better for the colder days but its more expensive.

Bookers is the best place for new veg oil but you will need an account.

As for a TD5 on veg, I would not recomend it as its a common rail system and in general common rail systems are not very happy with veg oil, but if any of you want to try it then thats fine just be aware that a large bill may come your way. However it should be fine on biodiesel.

Check out my sig for the best bio/veg forum, loads of info and a good bunch.

As the 200/300 tdi's are direct injection they need regular oil changes as veg oil contamination of the engine oil could make it go solid. I do mine ever 5k miles, flush and new filter every time.

td5 isnt a common rail so ive been told. was talking to a bloke on here not long back who knows his things about a td5. charslY i think hes called

First of all are we talking about bio or veg oil? they are not the same thing.

as far as mixing i would get 20l of veg pour out 2l add the unleaded and give it a good mix, then fill up the tank. once mixed it will not seperate

im buying svo at 83p a litre and mixing 12 litres with 20-25 derv in my tank, if i was to buy 2 litres of unleaded the money i was saving has now been spent. im getting confused so will somebody put me staright lol. i know the td5 is capable of running svo but unsure about pure svo

If you want to do this as a money saving exercise you should be using wvo and filtering it.

I doubt that, you just have to creative as to where you look for it.

I agree, I have a couple of regular places I get it and but I'm always on the lookout for more, think about all the pubs / restaurants / hotels / fast food outlets around you, have you been round them all and asked if you can have it?

if i was to get some wvo what filters do i need? and how many

not to mention, schools, clubs, old peoples homes and lots more, If you find places are taking it back to bookers then they are being paid 10p/l, if you offer to collect it from them and pay 10p/l you should get plenty.

You need to check out the veg forum in my sig, you will find all the info you need there about filtering and running cars on veg.

Sweet! So the filters in the above ebay link would be what i need then.

I sieve mine into a big water butt and leave it to stand for at least a week so any crap/water sinks to the bottom and then pass it through the 1 micron filters, works lovely:D.

Cheers for the info. Randomly my mates decided to convert his fiesta to run on veg oil. Ordered a small second tank, 3 way valve and pre-heater.
Gonna do the same to the Passat and probably eventually do the same to the Landy as well. Use diesel for start/stop and veg oil the rest of the time.

No need to convert a festa, the wife's Fiesta runs better on svo than on derv.
I ran my previous car (toyota) on veggie for years, but with our local branch of Macro shutting down and the supermarket price not being great at the mo (and Tesco nazi-ing the supply to 3 offers per customer) I just can't be arsed anymore.

Unless you can get wvo free or cheap, it's not really worth the bother. Any idea how long it takes to fill a disco with 3ltr bottles of oil!? Bloody ages.

Used wvo, if previously used to cook fatty meat products (hmmm...fatty meat products..) can also cause problems with build ups (I forget what they are called) that are apparently like a glassy film that will reduce engine efficiency, these oils are best treated and turned in to biodiesel as the fatty acids are removed or converted (again, I forget) during the process. It's all very simple if you are a chemistry genius, I'm sure. It's something to do with long and short chain hydrocarbons.

If you search ebay for B100 biodiesel, there are a few guys who sell it at around 80-90p/ltr. It's a lot less messing around than getting your driveway covered in oil stains, having the space to filter and store it (if it's wvo) and there is less chance of going out to the car on a winter morning and flattening your battery trying to get started (been there-curses!). There's nothing like that lumpy running that puts the fear of god in to you as you wait that you will hit operating temp before joining the M6.

Unleaded is the best (legal) thinner. You can also use kerosene (don't know where you get that from) and white spirit, but I found that changed the smell from donut shop to sewer. Might have just been me though.

For those worried about using unleaded in your oil mix: Truckers in colder climates and even here used to add a 'slug' (technical term I'm told) to keep the fuel viscosity down. But now derv is used more widely it is winterised by the manufacturers. A smidge of petrol in the old tank now and again will also clean your fuel system, I'm not sure how true that is though-most of the fuel system cleaning additves are mostly petrol derivertives anyway.
