VDO dayton MS3100 satnav - it works :D

I've never seen one of these until I got the Disco. Before I was given the manual with the rest of the car's documents I thought the little display in front of the hi-lo selector was knackered and that there was a CD "player" underneath the front passenger seat.

Pressed the eject button and a VDO map cd of 00/02 vintage pops out. The remote was rattling around the glovebox so put some batteries in that switched on the ignition and LO! It's a fully working satnav hehe! From what I've gleaned via t'interwebz is that these things were a Land Rover option back in the day?

Thanks to ebay I've got the latest GB and Ireland CD on the way, fingers crossed it'll install

On another note I discovered the inspired install of the loudspeaker & GPS antenna. I'm wondering why the handbrake light doesn't work (I'll search and/or post a thread about that), so I pulled the instrument panel apart. The GPS antenna is on a sticky pad on top of the clocks and thanks to the quite large space behind the clocks, the speaker is just lobbed in there! I didn't find any cash or bags of illicit substances I could sell on for a tidy profit to fund my Land Rover running costs... (JOKING! :drama: )

I haven't got as far as using it seriously yet, but I did look at the "input last destination" function - It's the address of the former owner :5breddevil: I haven't looked what other destinations are in there as yet. Should have worked for the CIA or FBI shouldn't I?

On flicking through the multi-language manual, I found some notes listing names along with what might be radio frequencies and region or country... Perhaps one of the previous owners, was a radio ham? This might explain some other screw holes in the interior trim.

2001 Discovery 2 TD5 XS. Unless the VDO dayton system just happens to work the same as the ones for Rover, Jag, Land Rover.

Just wikkied it. Made by Siemens. Not a standard fit for sure. Hope it better than the Becker that was standard..because thats rubbish, stoneage stuff. IMO.

Went out the the local Maccy D's tonight for tea. I'd punched in my home address beforehand and fired the satnav up to guide me home. Funny, it wanted to go exactly the same route home as I did The voice is quite a well spoken English gentleman - my missus and I reckon he should be nicknamed Lord Thomas-Thomas

OK the screen is not multi colour, nor does it give a 3D representation, but it does the job! The remote is quite easy to use (no touch screen!). When you start to type in a place etc. the system kind of plays Hangman with you; it only gives you the possible letters that can follow the one you've selected dependent upon the maps installed. A kind of predictive text based on its database

I'll see what the update CD brings when the postman delivers it.

As an aside to the above, I discovered the 6 CD interchanger below the drivers seat! I'd only ever looked under there just enough to see that the door to the underseat storage had a broken hinge (it's only flexible plastic & not a real hinge) and not far enough to notice the bloody big black box with a door on the front. I should stick to normal cars & bikes eh?
Now the radio doesn't say NO DISC when I press the CD button!

The new navteq map cd arrived today UK seller but the discs come from Thailand!! Will try and install it this weekend.

CD appears to be a success! Powered up the satnav without a CD in it; it asked me to insert a CD so put the new one in et voila!

Only tried it on a local trip so I knew where I was going again I should really find a road system newer than 2000/2002 and then see what happens.

Where did you get the CD from?.as I have. the same plus if you go to the menu it has options for a reversing camera also tv antenna?! Lol

I got it from ebay - Not seen a camera option in the menus on mine.... interesting!

I have the 5100 installed and bought a cheap camera off ebay and plugged this into the socket that looks like a 3.5mm jack. Mine seems to eat batteries though. Only reason I don't use mine all the time as a reversing camera is that you have to turn on the sat nav before it shows up.
