I had a petrol model before in 2wd but now I have this diesel I want it 4x4 and try off roading. When I first saw the slack bolt I thought the splines were shot. The prop and vcu spins free but the front prop stays solid. When spinning the wheel the head of the bolt is spinning aswel

Can you post a video if where the 2 parts don't move together?

I had a poke about today. To me it looks the the splines from the front prop to the vcu are shot. Maybe caused by the slack bolt. I'll remove it tomorro and get some pics posted up

The splines are long
Would have to be really fooked to turn freely even with the bolt loose

Either your vcu is bust or
the splines are reduced to nothing .....

It must be the splines. The rear shaft and vcu spin. It's not free spinning. There is some resistance. The head of the bolt also spins which makes me think it's the splines. What I don't no is what caused it

The bolt holding the front prop is screwed into the prop shaft

If this bolt turns when you spin the rear wheel(s) then the front prop must be turning too
Unless
The yolk is not fixed to the front pop ...??

The bolt is threaded into the end of the vcu is it not ? I just made a thread about it having BFG all terrain tyres on the rear and ****ty road tyres on the front. I'm now thinking it could be linked

Could well be! You'll get a speed difference front to rear which will generate heat in the vcu and more or less cause it to lock which will put huge strain on the drive train and break the weakest link which could be a loose damaged spline! I'd get the vcu checked by bell engineering cos it may well be buggered from it!:(

If the vcu splines are shot it can't even be refurbed. If this is the case I may try welding it up and running the same tyres

You can, look for hippos vcu test on here, its easier if you know what you're doing which is why bell are a good choice, but if you're technically minded its worth a go!

Ye iv watched lots of videos. I already did the test which was a fail as the rear wheels just spins free

:nopics:

The VCU can fail in one of two ways - either sieze solid or open drive. It could have failed in the later mode, or it could have a 2wd version fitted :(.

either way, it needs looking into.

As iv said it wad a older guy who had it from new and I can't see him going to the trouble of fitting a 2wd vcu. It's dark when I finish work so I can't do anything till the weekend
