Morning all, still trying to find a Defender, I see a lot of adverts where the selling price is + VAT. Whilst I know this is an extra 20%, what does this actually mean to the private buyer and can it be registered as a private vehicle once purchased?

The vat is there because its a business owner at the moment who reclaimed the vat at purchase, when selling he has to account for the vat , which you will pay (unless you are another vat registered business who can reclaim/offset ) .
The vat status of the vehicle is irrelevant when it comes to what class of road tax you are going to pay . This will be PLG most likely . HTSH

Apart from the VAT issue, many Defenders are registered as commercial, and this can have significant implications.

For instance, do you use any toll bridges or roads? If so you will often pay a higher price, eg £13 instead of £6.50 on the Severn Bridge.

Your insurance company may want to try and charge you extra.

Some camp sites will not allow commercial vehicles.

It doesn't matter that it LOOKS like a domestic vehicle - it's what is on the V5 that matters, and I have been told that it is no longer possible to change this.

I think you will find that this is only in relation to station wagons , and arose due to LEZ
From the OP point of view the fact that is being sold +vat is irrelevant in all things other than if he is vat registered himself ;)

Hi guys, I am looking for a hard top and I'm not vat registered. It will be a private car. If I do not claim the vat back, can I sell it normally when the time comes?

Its not possible for you to claim the vat back , whether you wanted or not .
Similarly when you come to sell it you cannot charge VAT , it is just a normal sale. :)
