Can someone tell me what valve spring compressor I need for a diesel series III? I am assuming there are different types and I haven't used one before, but I need to overhaul a smoky engine. Thanks

I got one similar to this Linky

same or similar to the ones i have, just be aware that you need to keep your fingers out of the way when pulling the lever over to compress the spring as you can trap them and lose skin

so it's keep your hand open rather than wrap your fingers round the handle

I have one like shown on the link but prefer to use an old screw type, a bit like a G clamp a bit slower but nice and safe. You also get a better feel when releasing to ensure collets are in place.

Close it up most of the way with the lever then the rest of the way with the screw.A tap on the side of the collet washer before putting compressor on helps them release, they can be tight.

if your doing this with the head off it shows dividence to check the primary combustion caps for damage such as being burned to a crisp or cracked round the ports

if they are replace them and get the head skimmed ( youll be amased at the difference it makes to the engine running )

if yer going the full monte like i did and replacing the valves for new ones make sure you replace the valve stem guides aswell as the old ones can wear out sort of egg shape and cause the buggers to smoke even with new stem oil seals fitted

If you do fit new guides, avoid ****part. I had to use them on my 2.25 diesel earlier in the year. Inlets where fine the exhaust ones where to tight and closed up when fitted. Had to ream every exhaust guide to size. You do not want a tight exhaust valve and the head off again.
