Hi,

Came to the old V8 last week (after a couple of months of sitting idle), and whilst I was waiting for the battery to charge a little I dipped the oil.
As soon as I had the smell of petrol was very obvious and the level was most of the way up the dipstick !!

Now I knew that after I had a faulty alarm/immobiliser removed the electric fuel pump had been left permanently live but it was a job "to get around too" so I just remove the connector after each use.... but the last use was in 3 ft of snow and I forgot so its probably (certainly) been left that way for 2 months until the battery went flat.

Long story short I know I need to drain the oil and change the filter asap but will a single change then run to temp then drain again be enough?

Is there some kind of extra flush required ?

Should I be adding any type of oil into the cylinders before I start it up ?

Is it likely to have done any damage whist sitting idle ?

What would you do ?

(I plan to pull apart the carb (Eidelbrock/holly) and check the floats for holes as I suspect that is the secondary problem to the fuel pump so I hope that will sort it out. )

Its a 1989 3.5 Classic

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, glad to hear that I don't have to undertake any major works !! :tea:

Does anybody know if I should be adding any type of oil to the cylinders before starting ?

If so what sort? Just usual engine oil ?

Cheers :)

Probably OK with nothing, but if you are worried just a drop of engine oil and crank with the plugs out to spread the oil around.

If its only been 2month should be fine just let it idel for a few mins first
but you should do that anyway cos you'll have just changed the oil !!
Id be more concerned how the fuel got there surly if the fuel pump was left running it would have just filled the cylinders?

Before attempting to turn it over and after changing the oil, I'd remove the plugs and squirt some oil into each cylinder at the highest point if pos so it runs round the whole ring land, then turn it over (plugs removed and fuel pump disarmed) to oil the bores, refit plugs and fire up.
